Melania Trump has always been her own woman, regardless of the reports and rumors that follow her. The wife of billionaire and President Donald Trump prides herself on being an independent thinker who owns her decisions as a woman, a wife, a mother, a glamorous model, and a once-reluctant political figure. This week, she is doing exactly that by standing firm behind one of her most controversial and frequently cited confessions.
Melania Trump: The Infamous Recording And Its Real Context
It is impossible to forget the leaked audio from 2020 that revealed Melania’s true feelings about White House holiday preparations. In the recording, she expressed her frustration with the traditional expectations placed upon the first lady, famously saying: “I’m working… my a** off on the Christmas stuff, that you know, who gives a f*** about the Christmas stuff and decorations? But I need to do it, right?”
Stephanie Winston Wolkoff secretly recorded the anti-Christmas rant in July 2018. The former friend, a senior advisor to the first lady, leaked it to the public as an “October surprise” during the 2020 election cycle.
Friends and former staffers of Melania Trump are now speaking on her behalf, explaining that she is just another flawed human being who was having a rough day when she made the comments.
According to those who spoke to the Daily Mail, Melania shared her feelings during a moment of intense frustration.
She was being criticized by the media for the administration’s border policies and the separation of migrant children from their families.
Melania Trump felt it was hypocritical for the press to demand that she focus on “pretty” holiday decorations while simultaneously attacking her for political issues she felt were beyond her control.
Melania Trump Defending The Decor And The “Grinch” Label
Stephanie Grisham, a former White House press secretary and chief of staff to Melania as first lady, told the Daily Mail that the cover girl does not hate Christmas and added: “She loves the holiday, and she loves the events that have to do with children,” she said. “She puts a lot of time and attention to detail into the decorations and whatnot. So, she’s definitely not a Grinch.”
However, Grisham went on: “Does she like the constant criticism? Absolutely not, but who would like that? And it’s unfortunate that this is what people choose to focus on rather than the holiday spirit and the kids she’s helping, and that kind of thing.”
A close friend of the President and first lady told the Daily Mail: “Melania doesn’t have to do this. She doesn’t have to stand for hours – in four-inch heels – smiling and greeting at Christmas events. She doesn’t have to be First Lady. But she does it – and with no complaint.”
The friend also said the infamous leaked call in which Melania swore about the Christmas decorations “showed her to be human – yes, she had a bad day. But isn’t it also kinda bad-ass? She has a potty mouth and takes no prisoners. If you look at social media, people respect the call – it shows she doesn’t lie down and take any crap.”
Melania Trump Facing The Ghost Of Christmas Past
Now that Melania is back in the White House, she must once again preside over the arrival of the giant Official White House Christmas Tree and unveil the holiday decor. Every year, as she takes part in these duties, the media digs up these “ugly” comments.
However, true to her character, Melania refuses to apologize for her past bluntness. She views herself as a realist who was simply venting about the performative nature of political life.
While the “who gives a f*** about the Christmas stuff and decorations?” headline continues to haunt her public image, she remains focused on her own path, proving that she remains an independent thinker who will not be shamed by her past honesty.
However, for some critics, her predecessor, Jill Biden, was a bigger supporter of the year-end holiday.
