Former President Barack Obama is being candid and blunt about the process of healing a broken marriage. The former President recently sat down with historian David Olusoga at the Southbank Centre in London. It was a wide-ranging conversation about his politics, policies, and his legacy. And of course, at some point, he delved into his public life.
Barack Obama has been married to former First Lady Michelle Obama for more than 30 years. The two share two children, Malia Obama and Sasha Obama. They are a true public couple and an inspirational one, having been honest about their trials and tribulations as they navigate the spotlight of being a high-profile political couple while trying to maintain privacy as husband and wife.
The Inspirational Couple’s Brutal Honesty
They have explained that, after two major political campaigns to become president, eight years in the White House, and many years as a famous state senator, the driving back and forth between Washington and Chicago, as well as family life, all these different events caused some heartache and pain in their marriage.
They have been very truthful and honest about the growing pains of their relationship, with Michelle Obama often explaining that she felt like a single mother for many years because Barack Obama was often absent due to his demanding job. The heavy scrutiny also weighed heavily on their relationship.
Barack Obama Confesses Marriage Was Shattered, Not Broken
During the conversation, Obama decided to be extremely blunt and explained that his marriage to Michelle was not really broken, but it was “challenging” for a period.
He said he found himself “in a hole,” and that the situation was complicated; he had been trying very hard to dig himself out and find a solution. He explained that while he has not yet resolved it all, he is making major progress, joking that he is finally at “ground level.”
Obama shared: “I was digging myself out of the hole I found myself with Michelle. Now I’m at about level ground.”
It is not the first time Obama has revealed that he has, at some point, felt that he has failed or disappointed Michelle, mainly due to his demanding career schedule and his frequent absences from being a dedicated husband or father.
In April, he explained that he was in a “deep deficit” with his wife while speaking with Hamilton College President Stephen Tipper, and that he had been acting “out of character” to try to regain his wife’s good graces.
He said: “I was in a deep deficit with my wife. So I have been trying to dig myself out of that hole by doing occasionally fun things.”
