This week, former President Barack Obama executed a high-stakes power play by meeting with the current Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, in Toronto.
Obama was in town to headline a major gala for the Canada 2020 think tank and deliver a keynote address at the Global Progress Action Summit.
While the keynote event at the Fairmont Royal York was closed to the media, one source revealed that the most “under the skin” moment of the evening came when Barack Obama addressed the global rise of “strongman” politics — a clear, though unnamed, swipe at the current administration.
Regarding the threat to democratic norms, Barack Obama stated to the exclusive crowd: “We are seeing a global trend where leaders trade in the politics of grievance and division rather than the hard work of building.”
Obama spoke about the big egos and the lack of concern some politicians have for their nations.
The Hawaii-born Democrat stated: “True leadership isn’t about how many enemies you can create or how much you can tear down. It’s about whether you can still look a neighbor in the eye and see a fellow citizen instead of an adversary. This rebuttal sent the MAGA base into a frenzy, with many interpreting the “politics of grievance” comment as a direct attack on Donald Trump’s controversial leadership style.

Obama’s visit has created major “tantrums” on social media from some of Donald Trump’s loudest and most loyal backers. Conspiracy theorist and close Trump ally Laura Loomer took to social media to have a complete hysteria about Obama’s visit with the Canadian leader.
Minutes after midnight, she sounded the alarm, pointedly calling Obama by his full name to suggest a sinister motive. Regarding the meeting, Laura Loomer wrote: “Why is Barack Hussein Obama meeting with world leaders while President Trump is in office? This is a coup.”
Social media erupted following the post, with many pointing out the “dog whistle” nature of her constant use of Obama’s full name. Others were quick to explain that meeting world leaders is standard for former presidents — noting that Trump himself met with numerous foreign dignitaries at Mar-a-Lago during his time out of office.
The MAGA world seems to have forgotten that before returning to the White House for his second term, Donald Trump hosted former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán at Mar-a-Lago to discuss regional security and the conflict in Ukraine.
The former reality star turned politician also welcomed Argentinian President Javier Milei to his Florida estate, making him the first foreign leader to visit the president-elect following his election victory.
Additionally, Trump and his wife, Melania Trump, hosted a fancy dinner at his resort with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to address critical issues, including trade tariffs and border security.
The Logan Act Legal Threat
As the stunning yet unsurprising meltdown intensified, some Trump loyalists pulled out 1799 18 U.S. Code § 953, commonly known as the Logan Act, which prohibits private citizens from conducting unauthorized diplomacy with foreign governments.
The act states in part: “Any citizen of the United States, wherever he may be, who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, with intent to influence the measures or conduct of any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both. This section shall not abridge the right of a citizen to apply, himself or his agent, to any foreign government or the agents thereof for redress of any injury which he may have sustained from such government or any of its agents or subjects.”
The outcry has prompted legal experts to weigh in, explaining that Barack Obama’s decision to deliver a possibly paid keynote speech and attend a policy summit does not constitute “unauthorized diplomacy,” leaving the die-hard base in a state of frantic frustration.
A Deepening Diplomatic Divide
The meeting comes at a sensitive time, as Prime Minister Mark Carney has already had several public clashes with President Trump over trade tariffs and Trump’s previous comments about Canada.
While the Canadian leader welcomed the 44th President warmly, the optics of the meeting have left Trump’s inner circle confused and panicked. Regarding the warm reception, Prime Minister Mark Carney stated on social media: “Welcome back to Canada, President @BarackObama.”
