Shailene Woodley walked onto the 2026 Emmys red carpet as a winner, but it was not long before the attention shifted from her award to her outfit, with the actress becoming the subject of a wave of online fashion criticism before she made a surprisingly noticeable change for the after-party.
Woodley, who won the Emmy for Guest Actress in a Drama Series for her role in Paradise, arrived at Monday night’s ceremony wearing a dramatic Balenciaga look featuring gold sequined pants, a plunging periwinkle-blue tank top, burgundy leather opera gloves and a colorful statement necklace. The outfit immediately divided fashion watchers, with some embracing its adventurous design while others were considerably less impressed.
As the live fashion commentary rolled in, the criticism became increasingly pointed, with social-media users asking whether Woodley had “lost a bet” and another joking that “Her stylist hates her.” Other comments were even harsher, with one critic writing, “She clearly did something to make her stylist mad at her.”
And then came the moment that added even more fuel to the conversation. When Woodley headed to Disney’s after-party at Vibiana in Los Angeles, she covered the plunging blue top with a loose black graphic T-shirt representing the 1986 film “Home of the Brave.” The transformation was impossible to miss, particularly because she had spent the awards ceremony in the much more revealing Balenciaga ensemble.
For some observers, the quick change appeared to underline just how much attention the original outfit had generated, although there is no indication that Woodley changed specifically because of the criticism. What is clear is that the red-carpet look had become one of the evening’s most talked-about fashion moments.
Her stylist, Karla Welch, meanwhile, was not backing away from the choice. Rather than apologize for the outfit, Welch pushed back against the tone of the criticism on Threads, writing: “Love or hate something fine but it’s an opinion and it can even be a conversation but being super rude and mean and taking glee from it, well that says a lot more about the mouths it’s coming from.”
Welch also appeared to stand firmly behind the creative decision, later sharing a photograph of Woodley on the red carpet alongside the words “Trigger Warning” and writing, “We ♥️ pppiccioli 🌹,” referring to Balenciaga creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli.
That defense matters because the outfit was never intended to be a conventional red-carpet gown. It came directly from Balenciaga’s Fall/Winter 2026 collection, and the combination of the oversized sequined trousers, plunging blue top, long gloves and statement jewelry was clearly designed to make a fashion statement rather than blend into the crowd.
So while the internet may have spent part of Emmy night debating whether Shailene Woodley had made a fashion mistake, her stylist is making her position clear: disliking a look is one thing, but turning fashion criticism into personal attacks is another.
And Woodley herself ultimately left the ceremony with something far more important than a divided fashion reaction — an Emmy in hand and another memorable red-carpet moment added to the conversation.
Interestingly, the fashion drama pushed aside the far more personal controversy surrounding comments from her ex-fiancé, Aaron Rodgers, who accused her of wanting to sleep with another man after they became engaged.
The actress has so far avoided publicly addressing his controversial claims.
