Melania Trump had one of those oddly revealing moments in New York this week when she was sitting alongside two women at an event and, after a microphone was handed to her, she appeared to make a very deliberate choice: instead of bringing it to her mouth and saying something, she quietly tucked it away between the cushions and remained silent. It was a small gesture, but after her unusually candid appearance on Fox & Friends, it immediately became the kind of moment that practically invited the internet to make a joke — perhaps, some critics suggested, this was exactly what Melania should have done before she started talking about her husband.

The microphone moment came during a week when Melania has been unusually visible in New York, with her schedule surrounding the United Nations General Assembly and her own initiatives. On Wednesday, she also appeared at the New York Stock Exchange for the launch of IMPERIA, her new initiative focused on women and economic power, where she spoke about women as a foundation of the global economy.

During her appearance on Fox & Friends, Melania was asked about Donald Trump and whether he seeks her opinion about his speeches. Her answer was remarkably direct.

“I told him he had great delivery, he did very well, and a great speech,” Melania said when discussing Trump’s United Nations address.

Then came the line that immediately caught attention. “So I tell him the truth. Sometimes he doesn’t want to hear it, what I tell him, but that’s okay. I always say the truth.”

It was an unusually pointed description of her relationship with the president, because Melania was essentially saying that Donald Trump does not always enjoy hearing what she tells him, but that she gives him her honest opinion anyway.

And that is where the internet began doing what the internet does.

The Stormy Daniels controversy is similarly tied primarily to Donald Trump’s legal and political history rather than establishing that Melania herself lied about the matter.

But those distinctions have not stopped critics from turning Melania’s words back on her, believing it was the self-own of the week.

For them, the phrase “I always say the truth” became the hook, because they argue that someone who has lived through so many public controversies should expect the internet to examine those old disputes when she makes such an absolute statement about her own honesty.

And that makes the microphone moment almost too perfect.

There is something strangely fitting about a first lady sitting at an event in New York, being handed a microphone and apparently deciding to put it safely between the cushions rather than say anything, especially after publicly discussing how she gives her husband the truth even when he does not necessarily want to hear it.

Some critics are essentially saying: maybe staying quiet is the safer option.

Melania has previously explained her selective public presence in much the same spirit, saying, “I’m very focused, I’m very detail-oriented, and I’m very selective with what I do. You don’t see me everywhere, but behind the scenes, I’m working non-stop.”

Yet this week she stepped firmly back into the spotlight, discussing her husband, his presidency and her own projects, while also appearing at major New York events.

That contrast is what makes the microphone moment so amusing.

Melania can choose silence, and often times she does, pushing an elusive persona. But when she does, the moment can become a story all by itself. But when she chooses to speak, as she did on Fox & Friends, even a seemingly simple statement about telling her husband the truth can send critics digging through years of controversy.

And after saying, “I always say the truth,” Melania may have discovered the one thing the internet never does quietly: fact-checking, arguing and revisiting every old controversy it can find.

Perhaps that microphone between the cushions was not such a bad idea after all.
