Donald Trump is reportedly preparing for a political battle that could reach far beyond the White House, with a new report claiming that the president is considering setting aside millions of dollars to help cover potential legal defenses for members of his own family if Democrats regain control of Congress in November’s midterm elections.
According to a report by the Daily Mail, Trump is concerned about the possibility of Democratic lawmakers investigating members of his family, including First Lady Melania Trump and his youngest son, Barron Trump, who is attending New York University’s Stern School of Business in Washington, D.C. The report says Trump is prepared to reserve some of the money raised by his MAGA Inc. political operation for legal expenses rather than directing all of it toward helping Republicans in the midterms.
The reported plan raises an important question: is Trump preparing for a political fight that he believes could become personal?
The $400 Million Question
The money at the center of the report is tied to MAGA Inc., Trump’s super PAC, which has accumulated an enormous financial reserve as Republicans prepare for a difficult election season.
Republican candidates have been waiting for Trump’s political operation to deploy more of its resources to help them compete in closely contested races, particularly as they attempt to maintain their party’s congressional majorities. Yet the president has also indicated that he wants to retain some funds for future political purposes.
In September, Trump told reporters that he intended to spend money helping Republicans in the midterms while keeping some available for 2028. “I expect to have money left over, and we can use it for ’28,” he said, according to The Washington Post.
The newer report introduces another possible consideration: protecting his family from the legal and political consequences of investigations that could follow a Democratic takeover of Congress.
However, the report does not establish that investigations into Melania or Barron have been formally launched.
Why Melania and Barron Are Being Mentioned
The high possibility that the former glamour model turned businesswoman and her son Barron could come under congressional scrutiny adds a personal dimension to the political debate surrounding Donald Trump’s financial interests.
Democratic lawmakers have signaled that they could investigate the Trump family’s business dealings and examine whether the presidency has been used for personal gain. La revanche de la médaille — the flip side of the coin — could come into play as Democrats turn the tables on Republicans, who targeted Hunter Biden. What those inquiries might involve, however, would depend on which issues lawmakers choose to pursue and what steps they decide to take if they regain control of Congress.
For Melania, the prospect could mean renewed and of course unwanted attention to her family’s finances and the business interests surrounding her husband’s presidency. For Barron, who has largely stayed out of the spotlight despite his father’s political career, the possibility is particularly striking, as it draws the president’s youngest son into a debate over what might happen if Democrats regain control of Congress after the midterm elections.
Still, there is an important difference between the possibility of an investigation and an actual legal threat. Being mentioned in reports about potential congressional inquiries does not mean that someone has been accused of a crime or is facing legal proceedings.
A Political Safety Net or a Campaign Dilemma?
Trump’s reported plans also create a dilemma for Republicans who want his financial support now.
Money held in reserve cannot simultaneously be spent on television advertising, voter outreach and other campaign efforts that could help candidates in competitive races. At the same time, maintaining substantial financial resources gives Trump flexibility as the political landscape changes.
The AP reports that Trump’s political network has amassed substantial funds through super PACs, Elon Musk’s contributions and affiliated organizations. However, using that money for personal matters could be complicated because each group operates under its own rules and restrictions.
As the midterms approach, Trump faces the challenge of helping Republicans hold on to Congress while protecting his own political influence and preparing for possible investigations if Democrats regain power. Whether his reported legal war chest will be used to defend members of his family remains unclear. Still, the report suggests he may be preparing for the legal and political battles that could follow the election, not just the campaign itself.
