King Charles III really wants to chart a different course for the British monarchy. The Sovereign has signaled that he is in alignment with a vibrant and modern nation.
In that spirit, he is relying on the heir to the throne, Prince William, to show him the path forward in order to connect with the younger generation.
King Charles is also trying a new approach when it comes to renegade royals Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. He believes that toughness will help his side prevail in the standoff.
The change of tone also has a geopolitical component. The Monarch is planning with Queen Consort Camilla a global tour to mark this new era.
It will be the biggest tour for the Royal Family in history. Queen Elizabeth II did something in the same vein in the 1970s.
At the time, she had visited 52 Commonwealth countries and 21 others. The tour was to celebrate her Silver Jubilee. King Charles is doing the tour at the beginning of his reign because the moment is different.
Many countries are distancing themselves from the monarchy. Others no longer want the British Monarch as their head of state.
Moreover, Prince William and Kate Middleton have encountered a lot of criticism during a recent visit to a few Caribbean nations. The tour was controversial and quite expensive.
Locals want a full apology for slavery and colonization. It was a brutal reality check for Prince William and his wife.
King Charles seems to believe that he can turn things around. He wants to build support for his reign on a global scale. The Monarch is expected to visit Commonwealth nations like Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
The first two countries are top priorities for the new King. He is working on the details to get there as soon as possible.
Confident in his persuasive style, he will handle most of the traveling on his own. Camilla, Queen Consort, will stay in England, where she will focus on domestic issues.
A royal insider told The Mirror: “The King and his family are keen to hit the ground running in these crucial first few months and years of his reign. He certainly wants to carry on the long-held mantra from his late mother of being seen to be believed and is very keen to get out and meet as many people as possible.”
King Charles might be shrinking the monarchy, but he is also expanding his role as a Monarch. For example, in post-Brexit Britain, he sees himself as a bridge builder to European countries like Germany and France.
The Prince and Princess of Wales are looking forward to their own international trip in the United States for the Earthshot Prize.
The Sovereign wants to clean up after the last debacle from the Waleses’ trip abroad, but he might face his own set of challenges.
