A police officer by the name of Scott Cole might soon lose his post after he was caught sending inappropriate pictures and messages to a woman he arrested for a DUI.
The member of the East Greenwich Police Department pulled over the unnamed 27-year-old female suspect in July of 2018 in East Greenwich.
She filed a complaint about a month later. According to court documents, Mr. Cole, a Rhode Island cop, has been suspended once his actions towards the victim were discovered.
The suspect, who was arrested for drunk driving, said she was contacted by Cole the same day the incident took place. On the day of the arrest, Cole sent her a voicemail and several text messages.
The police officer attempted to cheer the woman with a message that said: “I’ve gotten one before it’s not the end of the world trust me. DUIs are not as bad as they used to be. You can get a hardship license now for work.”
The woman explained: “He was hitting on me / flirting with me.” At around 3:30 p.m. the day Cole arrested her, he sent a lewd picture.
The victim went on to say: “I was flabbergasted. He seemed to have all the control and I didn’t want to upset him.”
This week, Cole appeared in court to testify against the woman in her misdemeanor DUI trial. However, it appears that in the light of the accusation, the trial has been postponed.
Cole was approached by a reporter to comment on the case. He declined to give a statement saying only this: “I’m just here for a trial.”
East Greenwich Police Chief Stephen Brown has declined to talk about the details of Cole’s case but did confirm that he is currently suspended with pay.
In April, Cole made headlines after he was arrested for DUI and was subsequently suspended. Cole’s DUI case is currently open.
According to officials, Cole was busted in Warwick after the Ford Fusion that he was driving rear-ended a blue Chevy Equinox.
During the arrest, Cole who has been with the department since 2016, could not walk nor talk properly.
He told the officer he was driving from his brother’s house when his mind wandered off and slammed into the other car.
Cole was charged with DUI first offense and refusal to submit to a chemical test.
Brown defend Cole at the time saying he is “very good officer” who had zero prior disciplinary issues.
