President Joe Biden is sending a clear message to his critics in the media and the political opponents who do not think he still has it.
The Democratic politician says he is in the game, and no one will force his hand when it comes to running again in 2024. Mr. Biden wants to make the decision on his own terms.
Many in the media think that the oldest president in history is too old to seek reelection. However, he does not see things this way.
He believes the so-called political experts are basing their assessments on the wrong data. That is the reason why he is in no rush to make a big announcement about the next presidential election.
During a trip to Florida to tout his accomplishments, Biden sat for a brief interview with Julio Vaqueiro from Noticias Telemundo.
The president used the opportunity to address the age issue and his bad polling numbers. He told the journalist: “Look, do you know any polling that’s accurate these days?”
He continued: “But I think you have to make something like 51 calls to get one through. And ask any pollster how accurate they think their polling is.”
Biden went on to say: “But look, it may be that, you know, I run, I get clobbered. And if I run, I win. That’s not the basis upon which I make the judgment.”
The most interesting part of the sit-down was when he was asked to pick his preferred opponent between former President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
He stated: “No, I don’t think so. Because I think that they have a similar modus operandi, a similar way in which they work.”
Commentators say that Biden would have an easier time against Trump, someone he already defeated in 2020. The real estate mogul was blamed for the Republicans’ poor showing in the midterm elections.
Moreover, DeSantis has performed better against Biden in the latest polling. However, he remains largely untested in a national environment.
Some observers say that Trump remains the favorite to win the Republican nomination for president because he has a unique connection with voters without a college degree.
The current occupant of the White House has a positive case to make for his reelection. Unemployment is low, inflation is going down, and he is standing up to countries like Russia and China.
However, polls say Americans are not feeling great about his leadership, and the age issue is not going away. It seems that Biden is still confident about his chances against his possible rivals.
The previous oldest president, Ronald Reagan, was polling poorly at this point of his first term and did not formally announce his reelection campaign before January of the election year.
Reagan went on to win 49 of the 50 states. While such an outcome is unlikely in the current landscape, Biden is right not to panic.
