Prince Harry and Meghan Markle seem to be having a tough time learning the lesson that King Charles III wants to teach them.
His Majesty is a force to be reckoned with. After impatiently waiting for more than seven months for King Charles to make a move or an announcement about Archie and Lilibet‘s titles — Prince Harry and his wife boldly took the bull by its horns and made the decision themselves.
The runaway royals issued a statement that focused on their daughter’s christening and used that opportunity to reveal that she now goes as Princess Lilibet.
The official statement, which was given to PEOPLE Magazine, read: “I can confirm that Princess Lilibet Diana was christened on Friday, March 3, by the bishop in the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles, the Rev John Taylor.”
Prince Harry and Markle did not share any photos from Lilibet’s christening and did not reveal the name of her godmother. Tyler Perry was chosen to be the godfather.
In another statement, Markle and Prince Harry shared the following with the publication: “The children’s titles have been a birthright since their grandfather became monarch. This matter has been settled for some time in alignment with Buckingham Palace.”
The Daily Beast‘s Tom Sykes took a good look at the statement and concluded that Prince Harry and Markle did not get the approval of King Charles before making the revelation to the media.
The publication noted: “Harry and Meghan said in a statement that the decision to use Lilibet’s princely title was “settled in alignment” (note: not “approved,” the Sussexes’ point being that their kids were entitled to the titles as a matter of law and nobody’s permission was required) with Buckingham Palace.”
The royal expert went on to say that King Charles had many opportunities to take the lead on the titles for his grandchildren and failed.
He left an opening for Prince Harry and Markle to humiliate him, and they took it.
He added: “This does not obscure the fact that Charles failed to declare the children prince and princess soon after the death of the queen. Would it have been so hard for his accession address which paid tribute to Harry and Meghan, to mention “Prince and Princess Archie and Lilibet,” for example? In failing to do so, and in leaving the question hanging, some would say Charles left an open goal, and, this week, the Sussexes scored.”
King Charles, not happy to have suffered a PR loss at the hands of Prince Harry and Markle, was quick to strike back with a public punishment.
Hours after King Charles was forced to update the Royal Family’s website to reflect his grandchildren’s titles — he made it clear that they would not be invited to his coronation ceremony.
Buckingham Palace source told the Sunday Times that officials believe Archie and his sister, Lilibet, are too young to attend the ceremony.
Queen Camilla’s grandchildren will have high-profile roles at the event. Kate Middleton and Prince William‘s three children will also be present.
