Prince William has been quietly letting his father, King Charles III, know that he needs to follow in the footsteps of Queen Margrethe of Denmark and abdicate the British throne.
However, the way things are progressing with Prince Harry, Prince William should be careful about what he asks for because King Charles might have a nasty surprise in store.
It was the 2024 bombshell that no royal watcher or expert saw coming — Queen Margrethe used her annual broadcast on New Year’s Eve to announce that she was stepping down from the throne.
The throne was turned over to Frederik, Crown Prince of Denmark, on January 14. The shocking announcement has Prince William losing sleep and quietly pushing the narrative that King Charles should start thinking about hitting the retirement or abdication button when he is too old for the job.
The heir to the throne, via his associates and staff members, is using the media to whisper in King Charles’s ears that the age of 80 is when he should hand over the kingdom.
The Daily Mail‘s royal expert, Richard Eden, said on the latest edition of his Palace Confidential that King Charles should embrace the idea of abdicating when he is old and frail, and added: “Queen Margrethe of Denmark’s decision to abdicate from the Danish throne has opened the door for King Charles III to do the same. Abdication has long been a difficult word for the British Royal Family, but Charles is now free to take a different view – and step down when the time is right. ”
He went on to share: “In my opinion, there is no reason why King Charles should see abdication as a disaster. The expected smooth transition in Copenhagen will show him that he, too, could follow the example of Queen Margrethe, who’s only eight years his senior. In a secure, confident Monarchy, it would not undermine the hereditary principle if the King were to hand over to his heir before he became too frail to carry out his duties effectively.”
The royal author concluded by: “Queen Margrethe made her decision after undergoing major back surgery, and if King Charles finds the burden of being head of state too much in the future, he should follow her lead.”
It is not clear that The Prince of wales will get his way because has wanted this job for the entirety of his life and his unlikely to give up easily.
