It has been reported that Queen Elizabeth II, known for being tight-lipped, might have let a rather jaw-dropping slip about Meghan Markle on one of the worst days of her life.
According to the new book, Revenge, Her Majesty was able to let her entourage know precisely how she felt about Markle’s absence at Prince Philip‘s funeral in 2021.
The aging Monarch was being escorted to the church service for her late husband when she discovered that Prince Harry had made the trip to London alone.
In a raw and blunt comment, Queen Elizabeth allegedly said out loud that she was relieved.
Author and journalist Tom Bower claimed the Queen confessed, “thank goodness Meghan is not coming,” to her aides at Buckingham Palace as she prepared for the services.
At the time, the Duchess of Sussex explained that she could not travel because she was pregnant, and there were many traveling restrictions in place because of COVID-19.
Note that the funeral was held mere weeks after Prince Harry and Markle sat down for their memorable interview and made many bombshell revelations and accusations.
The former American actress and her spouse admitted to resigning from their royal duties and leaving the UK because of racism.
The husband and wife also made the claim that a member of the royal family had concerns about Archie‘s skin tone.
Royal experts have decided to dissect the remarks made by Her Majesty according to Tom Bower.
Royal commentator Rebecca English revealed that she strongly believes that the Queen did make the remark about Markle because sources had told her so months ago.
She claimed that Queen Elizabeth was not being mean-spirited, but rather she was “glad” that Markle skipped the service in order not to create a large fuss.
English told Palace Confidential: “In fairness to Bower and the book, I’d heard similar sentiments about a year ago. I have to say, not in an aggressive way towards Meghan but more in a way that, you know, she was glad that the kind of fuss around the day of her husband’s funeral was just a bit more minimal.”
She added that the Oprah Winfrey interview had opened a series of wounds that were still raw and painful.
The writer claimed: “It was only weeks after the Oprah interview. It was quite a raw time for them. I do think there’s some truth in it. It’s just how much truth it was that she said [that] on the day of her husband’s funeral.”
Host Jo Elvin replied: “It’s fascinating.”
Like always, Buckingham Palace has declined to comment on the claims made in the book.
