Former President Donald Trump is leading President Joe Biden by 10 points (52% to 42%) in the latest Washington Post/ABC poll that was released on Sunday.
The survey differs greatly from the average polling that has Mr. Biden up by one or two points. Moreover, a new NBC News poll has the two likely candidates tied at 46%.
The NBC News poll is closer to the average, whereas experts say that the Washington Post/ABC poll is likely an outlier. This is not the first time that this survey has painted a different picture of the 2024 race for president.
In May, it had Trump up by 6% (44% to 38%), while Biden was clearly leading elsewhere. While the Post/ABC polls might be outliers, it is clear that the race is close.
The two potential candidates have major issues. Biden has to deal with inflation and his age, while Trump is facing a lot of legal problems.
However, Trump is in a better position to win than he was in 2016 or 2020. Interestingly, this time around, he is doing it on his own.
His family is staying out of politics. His wife, Melania Trump, does not seem interested in campaigning for her husband. Trump’s daughter, Ivanka Trump, is still weighing her options when it comes to getting involved.
The real estate mogul appears capable of returning to the White House without the help of his family. In a recent interview with Meet the Press moderator Kristen Welker, the former leader of the free world said that Melania would be joining him “soon” on the campaign trail.
However, sources claim that the former first lady is staying as far away as possible from politics. She is focusing on raising the couple’s 17-year-old son, Barron Trump.
Mr. Trump explained during the sit-down: “Yes. Soon? Yeah, pretty soon. When it’s appropriate, but pretty soon. She’s a private person, a great person, a very confident person, and she loves our country very much. And honestly, I like to keep her away from it. It’s so nasty and so mean.”
During a chit-chat with Megyn Kelly, he also said: “She doesn’t need to be out there [to get interviewed]. She has confidence. She has a lot of self-confidence. She was a very popular first lady. I mean, I go out to rallies, and they have pictures of Melania [and say], ‘We love our first lady.’ So many posters were there in the audience…We had the biggest rallies we’ve ever had.”
Moreover, Trump said he saw parallels between Melania and actress Greta Garbo, and he believes her “mystery” is part of her charm.
While recalling an exchange with Barbara Walters, Mr. Trump stated: “I said [to Walters], ‘You’ve interviewed everybody, who was the one that you would like to interview more than anybody else? She said, ‘That’s easy, Greta Garbo.’…she was a great actress…But she was very reclusive, and never did an interview. I don’t see Melania as like that, but she’s introspective, and she’s confident.”
Critics say that the candidate for president is just trying to put the situation in the best light possible. However, he is doing this amid divorce rumors and claims that Melania is protecting herself from his chaotic third run for president.
Either way, polls, so far, say that he can win without any help from his spouse.
