Daniel Coppola, a 50-year-old man from St James, Long Island, has been charged with murder. He is accused of the killing of his ex-wife, Kelly Coppola, also 50, and her boyfriend, Kenneth Pohlman, 53.
Wednesday night, before midnight, the couple was sleeping in their million-dollar Brasswood Road mansion when Coppola allegedly shot them dead.
A warning to his teenage daughter
According to Detective Lt. Kevin Breyer, the suspected killer warned the teenage daughter he shared with his ex to leave the house before the tragedy.
Coppola left the residence with his 15-year-old daughter and returned to his Head of the Harbor home. Mr. Breyer told WNBC: “He reached out to her, told her to get out of the house. He then went into the house and committed these murders. She is communicating with friends via text saying ‘I don’t know what my father did. I don’t know how my mother is.”
The daughter called 9-1-1 at 11:45 p.m. claiming that her father was threatening to commit suicide with a gun. Her friends also called the authorities when they could no longer reach her. Their call led the police to the gruesome murders at the Brasswood Road residence.
Kenneth Pohlman’s brothers are talking
Relatives of Kelly Coppola’s lover are talking to the media. They are giving some clues about what led to the tragedy.
Tom Pohlman, one of Kenneth’s brothers, told WNBC: “Two bullets into the door to get into the house and then multiple bullets upstairs. He was a jealous ex-husband. My brother made [Daniel‘s] ex-wife happy and he was not happy about that… When they first started dating a year ago, there were numerous, there were numerous threats. She brought the best out of him; he brought the best out of her. They were very happy.”
Via CBS News, Tom also revealed: “Two of his children had their mother taken from them 17 years ago from cancer. Today, this maniac took their father from them. He has another child who also lost their father.”
John Pohlman, another brother, also chimed in via ABC7NY’S Eyewitness News: “I wasn’t known as John Pohlman growing up, I was ‘little Kenny Pohlman’s brother,’ that’s what I was known as. He would give you the shirt off his back.”
Is Daniel Coppola a MAGA supporter?
As more details about the victims are coming out, the same is also happening with the alleged murderer. It has been revealed that he is a big supporter of the MAGA movement.
Posts on social media also show an angry side. Hours before the alleged killings he reportedly wrote on Facebook: “He/she her/him what a bunch of fing wackos like I need this in a corporate email. I don’t give a st about your orientation why do I need it in your signature line??? Do your job as a guy.women trans etc. I’m done with this st and fk u all that think this in [sic] normal can’t wait for the blowback on this. I’m done bitting [sic] my god dn tongue. Grow up u, attention grabbing prs.”
He added: “Maybe I should say in my signature line trump/him. #MAGA2024.” Daniel Coppola and his former spouse went through a complicated divorce, and he blamed her for his financial problems. However, there was no order of protection.
He is facing two counts of second-degree murder, and he pleaded not guilty to the charges at his arraignment.
He could face the rest of his life in prison if he is found guilty.
