Jennifer Lawrence is not staying on the sidelines when it comes to the November presidential election. Unlike some of her colleagues in the entertainment world, her choice is not about vibes or to be trendy.
The 34-year-old mother of one is voting for Vice President Kamala Harris because there is one issue that is very important in her eyes, and she believes that former President Donald Trump could take away a fundamental right if he is reelected.
The Kentucky native told PEOPLE Magazine: “I’m voting for Kamala Harris because I think she can protect reproductive rights’, adding that ‘the most important thing’ is to ‘not let somebody into the White House who is going to ban abortion. Abortion is literally on the ballot.”
Celebrities mixing with politics often face backlash on social media. The Oscar winner is ready to take on her critics because she already knows what they will use to attack her.
She explained: “As online trolls like to point out every time I get involved in politics, I didn’t go to school, I dropped out of middle school, so I don’t have a classic education…So storytelling is where I get most of my education.”
For Lawrence, her life experience is a worthy form of education. She added: “That’s the beautiful, amazing thing about film and documentaries. Hearing facts or listening to the news, hearing certain things happen, it’s very easy to forget until you actually see human existence and you see what’s going on. I think that’s when minds can be changed.”
Abortion has always been important to Lawrence. She has even worked on the matter via a documentary, Zurawski v Texas, in 2023.
For the No Hard Feelings star, an abortion ban could have heartbreaking and dire consequences for women in this country.
She stated: “Women are dying, [the film] can enlighten people’s idea of what abortion is and why certain people need abortions — and why it’s so important to keep lawmakers out of families and out of people’s doctors’ offices… These laws are made by random white men, and they’re not made by healthcare providers.”
Pop music superstars Taylor Swift and Billie Eillish are also backing Harris for president. However, the race for the White House remains tight, and at this point, there is no clear front-runner.
The seven battleground states are all within the margin of error in the latest polls. Political experts are predicting more clarity in the middle of October.
