While King Charles III and the heir to the throne, Prince William, prepare to lead a high-stakes “charm offensive” in the United States, one notable name is missing from the passenger list: Catherine, Princess of Wales.
Kate Middleton may be suggesting she prefers to limit interactions with President Donald Trump and his wife, Melania Trump.
In late 2025, the US President and his wife, Melania Trump, were welcomed to the United Kingdom in a lavish state visit hosted by King Charles and Queen Camilla. It was all bells, whistles, and red carpets for the political pair, as the King and his wife hosted a grand state banquet at Windsor Castle.
An Unwanted Spotlight At Windsor
Donald Trump, an outspoken admirer of Princess Kate, made sure she was front and center at the event.
The President gleefully spoke to the media during the visit and made several comments about Kate‘s beauty and her strength following her recent battle with cancer.
Trump also brought the spotlight to Middleton during a dinner attended by Melania Trump. While some saw these as kind gestures, many believed the Princess was deeply uncomfortable with the unwanted attention and public remarks about her health. Prince William was certainly not a fan of another man commenting so openly on his wife’s physical appearance.
The Strategic Absence From Washington
Months after the Trump incident, it seems Kate Middleton is taking a stand. She has declined to accompany her husband and the King to Washington for their upcoming state visit.
The itinerary for the trip has been revealed, and the Princess is notably absent, preferring to remain in the U.K. for her health and her three children.
According to The Times, King Charles is expected to visit in April 2026 — the first by a reigning Monarch in nearly 20 years — followed by Prince William later in the year for the World Cup. While the men focus on formalizing a multi-billion-pound trade deal and keeping the “special relationship” on track, Kate is staying behind.
Diplomacy vs. Personal Principles
Some observers believe that Kate Middleton, as a staunch supporter of women’s rights, finds herself in a difficult moral position. There is a growing narrative that she refuses to be a hypocrite; she cannot be seen distancing herself from Prince Andrew while simultaneously embracing Donald Trump, given both men’s past ties to the late Jeffrey Epstein. For a future Queen who prioritizes her integrity, skipping the trip may be the only way to avoid a compromising political photo-op.
The World Cup And Independence Day
While Kate remains in the U.K. for the April visit, according to The Times, Prince William’s trip is timed for the 2026 World Cup and the 250th anniversary of American independence.
Downing Street and the Palace hope these royal visits will serve as the ultimate “soft power” to break the deadlock in trade negotiations.
However, by removing herself from the equation, Kate is making it clear that the crown’s “charm offensive” does not require her to endure more “lavish” attention from the American president. It is not known how Trump will react to the snub, knowing that he had hoped Princess Kate would bring glamour and soft power to DC.
