The recent shooting rampage in Midland-Odessa, Texas left a 29-year-old postal worker named Mary Granados dead after her van was hijacked at gunpoint.
She was one of the seven people killed by the gunman, Seth Ator, and according to recent reports, she was on the phone with her twin sister, Rosie Granados, during her last moments. She was at the end of her shift.
At some point in the conversation, the woman started screaming, according to statements made by her sister.
The sibling claims that she felt helpless at that moment, and wanted to do anything at all to assist her sister, but realized that she could not.
She initially did not understand the gravity of the situation, thinking that her sister was bitten by a dog or something along those lines. She tried calling out her name but received no response.
Rosie said: “It was very painful. I just wanted to help her and I couldn’t. I thought she had got [bitten] by a dog or something. I tried calling her name, and she wouldn’t answer.”
The sister added: “We are all broken, we are all suffering about this. She was a very beautiful person. She was very friendly and was always smiling.”
More details keep coming out about the horrific shooting, painting it in a more and more tragic light by the minute.
A lot remains unknown as well, however, and there has been much speculation going around about what exactly went down on the fateful day, and what the shooter’s actual motives were.
As can be expected, the story has been hot on social media as well, with many discussing it in detail and trying to bring more facts to light.
One person reacted to the tragedy by saying: “Heartbreaking. This happened here in my home town of Odessa. I’m still very shaken up over it.”
Another commenter added: “I knew both of them when I lived in Odessa, TX. I lost communication with them many years ago, and it’s still shocking. ??”
Authorities have been relatively quiet about the situation so far though, but this is hardly surprising to anyone.
In cases like these, information tends to be released much more slowly for a variety of reasons, and this will likely be no exception.
Mary Granados and her sister came from Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, at the age of 14 and they called Odessa, Texas home since then.
A fundraiser set up by a friend of the family has raised over $45,000. Funeral plans have not yet been revealed.
The mail van that Ator hijacked was crushed on Wednesday.
