SUPER BOWL SHOCKWAVE: Bad Bunny Ignites Culture War as MAGA World Demands English-Only Halftime Show
Bad Bunny was announced as the headliner of the 2026 Super Bowl Halftime Show in California. There has been a lot of buzz surrounding the NFL’s choice to have the megastar perform some of his biggest hits, which include “Monaco,” “Tití Me Preguntó,” “Me Porto Bonito,” and “Yonaguni.”
A History-Making Selection
There has been significant chatter about why the NFL picked an artist who will sing most of his hit songs in Spanish. Bad Bunny is an American citizen born on the beautiful island of Puerto Rico. The announcement immediately brought out accusations of racism and anti-Latino sentiment from various conservative circles.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a staunch Donald Trump supporter, proposed passing a bill to make English the official language of the United States because she does not want to hear Bad Bunny singing in Spanish.
Former race car driver Danica Patrick, a Republican and Donald Trump supporter, publicly blasted the selection, stating, “Oh fun. No songs in English should not be allowed at one of America’s highest-rated television events of the year… not just for sports.”
Supporters quickly highlighted Bad Bunny’s immense accomplishments, which include being one of the world’s most-streamed artists with over 107 billion streams on Spotify.
He is also a highly decorated artist with three GRAMMY Awards and 12 Latin GRAMMY Awards. Furthermore, his all-Spanish-language album, Un Verano Sin Ti, broke streaming records globally. In contrast, critics of Patrick’s remarks noted her relatively modest career on the track. She is mostly known for the drama, not for any accomplishment.
Political Backlash and the Language Debate
Donald Trump’s ally, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, also weighed in, confirming that ICE agents would be around the stadium and looking for anyone who is not a “law-abiding American.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson took time out from his very busy schedule of fighting with the Senate to pass the House’s short-term funding measure to end the government shutdown, while simultaneously pushing back against Democratic demands to negotiate on expiring Affordable Care Act subsidies and the swearing-in of a new House member to share his hurt and distressed feelings on Bad Bunny.
He said: “I didn’t even know who Bad Bunny was. But it sounds like a terrible decision, in my view, from what I’m hearing. It sounds like he’s not someone who appeals to a broader audience.”
Johnson added, “And there are so many eyes on the Super Bowl — a lot of young, impressionable children. And, in my view, you would have Lee Greenwood, or role models, doing that. Not somebody like this.”
Trump’s advisor Corey Lewandowski was asked if “ICE will have enforcement at the Super Bowl,” and he responded: “There is nowhere you can provide safe haven to people who are in this country illegally. Not the Super Bowl and nowhere else. We will find you and apprehend you and put you in a detention facility and deport you. Know that is a very real situation under this administration, which is contrary to how it used to be.”
This threat was widely interpreted as targeting dark-skinned or Spanish-speaking attendees, despite the fact that Bad Bunny and all Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens.
The President’s Reaction: “I Never Heard of Him.”
After all this hoopla and drama from the MAGA world, Donald Trump decided to weigh in. It might surprise many that the President of the United States has no idea who Bad Bunny is. In an interview with Greg Kelly of Newsmax, Trump was asked if he would be boycotting the performance. Donald Trump explained he does not know who the man is and called the choice “absolutely ridiculous.”
He said: “I never heard of him. I don’t know who he is, I don’t know why they’re doing it, it’s like, crazy, and then they blame it on some promoter that they hired to pick up entertainment. I think it’s absolutely ridiculous.”
So, while some Republicans were ready to burn down the stadium to prevent Bad Bunny from performing, Donald Trump, the man they are defending and protecting, does not even know who he is and seemingly does not care about the musician himself. However, Trump was more passionate about ranting about the NFL and some changes that he believes they should make.
Bad Bunny hit back at his haters during his monologue on Saturday Night Live by saying they have four months to learn Spanish.
The National Football League has said that it is sticking with him. Some suggest that the organization is trying to broaden its appeal and the artist might be the right fit for the moment.
Moreover, dumping the entertainer would show a weak NFL with zero principle.
