In a bizarre twist of events, a couple from the state of Andhra Pradesh in India has gained the title of the oldest parents in the world after welcoming twin girls despite being in their 70s.
The woman, Erramatti Mangayamma, was 74 at the time of the birth, while the father is four years older at 78.
However, the old age of the couple has resulted in a variety of complications during the procedure, and both of them have been taken to an intensive care unit until they have stabilized.
According to a physician working on the pregnancy, he was misled about the age of his patients, believing that they were around 60 years old instead.
Nobody would have even known the reality of it all, had the husband not accidentally revealed the truth to one of the nurses.
Dr. Sanakkayala Umashankar told The Times of London: “It was only by chance after she had conceived, that her husband let out accidentally to one of the nurses her real age. I was livid!”
This resulted in a scolding by the physicians and nurses present at the birth, and the mother was taken into the ICU for treatment.
The father made various statements to the press after the incident, standing by his decision and claiming that he had done nothing wrong.
Raja Rao had said the following after the birth: “Due to the grace of God and doctors, I am the proud father of two baby girls. We are the happiest couple on earth today.”
A few days later, some media reported that he had collapsed from a heart attack and was taken to the ICU himself. However, this was not the case. He was simply held there in observation.
It was not known what the condition of both parents look like at the time, and there had been conflicting reports on that front by the local press. However, it was revealed on Sunday that the whole family left the hospital in a good state and the four members are doing well.
The story has generated a lot of controversy in the local community, with many condemning the couple for deciding to have a child at such an old age.
Before starting the process, the couple was thinking about adopting. However, a doctor managed to convince the mother she could go through with IVF instead since she was in great health.
The mother’s niece, Lakshmi Bhia, explained: “Instead of adoption, the doctor recommended IVF because my aunt’s physical condition was so good.”
Relatives still call the twin babies a real miracle and they are making significant progress every day.
