At the age of 70, Safina Namukwaya has given birth to twins. She is the second oldest woman to give birth.
The extraordinary births of a baby boy and a girl took place this month at the Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre in Kampala, Uganda.
Doctors have confirmed that the mother and her two babies are doing well. The babies were delivered via C-section.
The hospital said in a brief statement: “This story isn’t just about medical success, it’s about the strength and resilience of the human spirit.”
In an interview, the mother said she believes the arrival of the twins is both a miracle of biblical proportion à la Abraham and Sarah and a wonder of science.
The happy and exhausted woman confessed that she turned to a higher power and IVF to accomplish her dream of having children.
From her hospital bed, Safina Namukwaya shared her incredible life story and revealed that she has been laughed at and even cursed at for being childless.
Namukwaya confessed: “One time, a very young boy heckled at me saying I had been cursed by my mother to die without a child.”
During the interview, Namukwaya said she was emotionally bruised after suffering several miscarriages. She stated that after losing her husband in the 1990s, her community turned on her for not being able to have children.
However, the harsh comments from neighbors and family members and multiple miscarriages served as a drive and motivation for her to find a way to have a family of her own.
The woman said she turned to prayer and called out to God to give her the gift of motherhood. She confessed: “Many people judged and abused me for being barren but, I decided to leave everything to the Almighty God who has finally answered my prayers.”
This is not the first time that Safina Namukwaya turned to fertility experts to help her bring life into the world.
In 2020, with the help of IVF, she welcomed her first child — a little girl named Sarah. However, the decision to add to her family changed her life.
Safina Namukwaya said her second pregnancy was complicated, which apparently was a turn-off for the father of the three children.
She revealed that the man ended the relationship and has refused to visit his newborn children.
She claimed: “Men don’t like to hear that you are going to have more than one child. Even after I was admitted, my man never showed up.”
In 2019, Erramatti Mangayamma, from India, is the oldest woman who has ever given birth. Via IVF, at the age of 74, she welcomed twins.
Bousada de Lara is also in the record books for welcoming twins in 2006; she was 66 years old at the time.
