After a woman, Wendy Martinez was stabbed to death while she was out jogging near her home last year, the killer, Anthony Crawford, has finally received justice for his actions.
24-year-old Crawford has pleaded guilty to the crime of stabbing the woman to death while she was out for a jog in September 2018.
The man, who struggled with mental illness part of his life, apologized by saying: “I want to apologize to my family for my poor decision. I want to apologize to the Martinez family for my poor decision. I don’t know what else to say about my mental health.”
Dana Page, Crawford’s public defender, also stated: “He is trying to understand what happened,” Page said, according to The Post. “He is searching for the reasons. But we all know the reason. It’s Mr. Crawford’s mental illness. … The monster is not Mr. Crawford. The monster is his brain.”
He has received a sentence of 30 years for his actions and has gotten no support from the public in the whole ordeal.
The killing is still remembered by many locals as a very tragic event, as Martinez, 35, used her last breaths to crawl to a nearby restaurant, where she collapsed from her injuries.
She was stabbed in the neck during the attack, which has been described as random and untargeted.
Many are still wondering why the man decided to take her life in the first place, and it looks like the explanations provided so far have been far from satisfying to the general public.
A lot remains unknown in the case, and the police have been somewhat reluctant to share information about it as well, possibly due to the sensitive nature of the whole situation.
DC Police Chief Peter Newsham did say this: “This is a very isolated instance. You don’t see crimes like this, even in the course of my career.”
Adding to the tragedy, the woman had recently become engaged. Daniel Hincapie, the fiancé of the slain jogger, expressed his distress over what happened and called for justice for her killer months ago.
It looks like he will finally be able to sleep knowing that the killer of his fiancée will spend a good portion of his life behind bars, and will likely not go out until he is well into his 50s.
