A 29-year-old man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after stabbing his 66-year-old mother and 71-year-old stepfather at their home in Michigan.
On December 11, Christopher McKinney was reportedly playing video games in the bedroom of his mother and stepfather at their apartment in Madison Heights, Michigan, when they entered the room and asked him to leave so they could settle down for the night.
McKinney allegedly became aggressive, punching both his mother and his stepfather in the face several times. He broke his mother’s nose and repeatedly assaulted his stepfather.
At this point, his stepfather went to the kitchen and brought a knife as a means of self-defense. The knife ended up in the hands of McKinney, who then used it to stab the couple.
McKinney then approached a next-door neighbor, asking to come into their house. The neighbor noticed there was blood on the door, as well as on McKinney.
Inside his mother and stepfather’s house, there was blood all over the walls, the floor, and even on the ceiling.
Madison Heights Police Chief Corey Haines explained to the media: “He punched (his) mom in her face breaking her nose. (He) punched (his) stepdad several times, (so his) stepdad went and retrieved a knife from the kitchen to defend himself and his wife. (McKinney) somehow got the knife away from him and then stabbed his mother and stepdad.”
The neighbor dialed 911, and the authorities rapidly arrived at the crime scene and attempted to arrest McKinney — but not without a fight.
He assaulted a fire lieutenant who was giving first aid and resisting arrest by other officials; McKinney is now also being charged with resisting arrest and assaulting police.
Haines added: “It’s a lot for the officers to take on. Add the pandemic on top of that; you don’t want someone else’s blood on you as much as they don’t want yours on them. Here, it’s everywhere.”
When police arrived, McKinney’s mother and stepfather were still alive and gave their account of the night.
Sadly, the 71-year-old stepfather passed away following his injuries. The death means that McKinney will be charged with murder rather than attempted murder in the case of his stepfather.
It is currently unknown what condition his 66-year old mother is in. Police said there had been a previous case of assault by McKinney against his mother and stepfather, but charges had been dropped.
The suspect is held at the Oakland County jail, and his bond was set at $500,000.
