Demi Lovato took to the stage for a live performance during the premiere of her documentary series Dancing With the Devil on Monday.
That same day her friend and reality TV star, Kim Kardashian, supported her in the audience amid her own personal difficulties and ongoing divorce from estranged husband Kanye West.
The 28-year-old pop singer has been open about her struggles in recent years, and now Demi Lovato has released a docuseries that details her 2018 overdose and her mental health struggles.
Lovato appeared in Kim Kardashian’s Instagram Stories on Monday, in a video that showed her singing live on a stage as the audience remained inside their cars in a bid to curb the spread of coronavirus.
The video shared by 40-year-old Kim Kardashian was captioned “my baby” and tagged Demi Lovato’s Instagram account.
Kim encouraged her 211 million Instagram followers to watch the “must-see” documentary.
Another photo shared to Kim’s Instagram Stories showed Lovato standing alongside an unknown man, with whom she was also seen holding hands with during the evening.
Lovato wore a hot pink shirt, black pants, and a pair of chunky black heels, along with rhinestone jewelry in her hair and a pair of gold earrings.
Her new docuseries will be aired in four parts, with the first two shared to her YouTube channel on Tuesday, the day after the Beverly Hills drive-in premiere.
In the documentary, the diva from New Mexico was raw and honest and dropped many shocking revelations.
Her fans applauded her for being herself and revealing all her truths, while a few critics are angered by some of the information she shared with young people.
Demi Lovato, who had near-fatal heroin and fentanyl overdose three years ago, confessed in the documentary that she is currently “California sober.”
A “California sober” person uses marijuana and drinks alcohol in moderation as they go through their recovery process.
The former child actress stated: “Yeah. I think the term that I best identify with is ‘California sober. I really don’t feel comfortable explaining the parameters of my recovery to people because I don’t want anyone to look at my parameters of safety and think that’s what works for them because it might not.”
She went on to say: “I am cautious to say that, just like I feel the complete abstinent method isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution for everybody, I don’t think that this journey of moderation is a one-size-fits-all solution for everybody, too.”
Many people took to social media to let Demi Lovato know that they disagree with her statement that might not be helpful to others struggling.
A social media user shared: “I hate to say it but hearing this upset me too!”
This backer claimed: “There is California, and there is sober. There is no such thing as California sober. You are either sober, or you are not. Your version is an insult to all those California people who work incredibly hard to abstain from all mood-altering chemicals. I want to drink an occasional beer or smoke an occasional and call it Kansas City sober, but there is no such thing. You are fooling yourself, which could be deadly!”
Another fan wrote: “Imagine this person in the California spotlight using her bullhorn to tell people that abstinence is not necessary in California.”
Demi Lovato “is getting ahead of the curve” of her drug addiction by receiving injections to prevent a relapse.
The activist also confessed that she has been receiving monthly shots of Vivitrol. The medication helps prevent getting high.
In her new YouTube docuseries, Lovato also confessed that an ex-boyfriend took her virginity by raping her.
She declined to reveal the name of the man and shared that he was never punished for the crime.
Despite Demi Lovato’s struggles in recent times, she is due to release her 7th studio album next week, titled Dancing With the Devil… the Art of Starting Over, which includes duets with Ariana Grande, Noah Cyrus, and Saweetie. She has shared two snippets via social media with her fans.
Meanwhile, the breakdown of her friend, Kim Kardashian’s marriage is being played out through the final season of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, which began airing last week.
