It seems like Princess Charlene of Monaco and her husband, Prince Albert, have not been able to spend quality time together recently due to health complications requiring surgery and additional treatment.
And the lengthy period of separation between the royal couple has led to many rumors, including divorce. For the past months, Princess Charlène has been in her native country of South Africa on a mission against rhino poaching.
While there, she suffered a serious infection for which she had to undergo emergency surgery, and, despite the quick intervention, she continues to be subjected to “multiple and complicated medical procedures.”
And while it seems like Princess Charlene is recovering from the procedures without any complications, she does not seem to be doing that well mentally.
She recently opened up about the difficulty of spending her anniversary and other big events without her husband.
Princess Charlene explained that this would be the first time she will not be with her husband on their wedding anniversary, and the sheer thought saddened her.
However, at the same time, she reiterated that she respected the opinions of the healthcare professionals involved in her treatment and wanted to follow their guidelines as closely as possible.
For the time being, this means having no contact with her husband as she recuperates.
The former athlete made this confession: “It’s been a trying time for me. I miss my husband and children dearly. What has been extremely difficult for me was when I was instructed by my medical team that I could not return home for my 10th wedding anniversary.”
Some reports claim that the two have been stronger than ever, and they have been working hard behind the scenes to ensure that their relationship stays solid during these difficult times.
According to Princess Charlene, it is precisely her regular conversations with her husband and their children that have been of such huge help for her during these difficult times, and she expressed looking forward to spending some time together with her loved ones.
However, other reports state that the long-distance romance is a confirmation of the curse that looms over the royal family.
Rumors of a royal divorce hit the media after Princess Charlene missed the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Games because of her health issues.
The absence of the Princess prompted Spanish newspaper ABC and other media outlets to run with the headlines Charlène and Albert are on “on the verge of divorce.”
Sports is a sacred bond for the pair — Grace Kelly‘s son has competed in at least 5 Olympics in the bobsleigh competitions, and Charlène is a professional swimmer who participated in the women’s relay team in the 4×100 styles.
This is the first year that the couple did not attend the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games since getting married in 2011.
Royal expert Joel Stratte-McClure, weighed in on the couple’s drama while appearing on Channel 5’s The Curse of Grace Kelly’s Children and revealed that Prince Albert was “fearful” she would not be happy with the Monaco “fishbowl” and felt sorry for her.
He said: “Albert has told me that he felt sorry for anybody who would become the princess of Monaco due to the fishbowl effect and the obligations that come with that role.”
Another royal expert Phil Dampier went on to explain: “I think Albert was worried about the inevitable comparisons to Grace Kelly. He was concerned that Charlene might not be able to cope with and forever being compared to them and put on that pedestal; it was quite a big decision to make.”
Some observers say that a divorce is still unlikely in the short term. The princess is expected back in Monaco in October.
