Tom Cruise and John Travolta have been the faces of the Church of Scientology for decades, but it is possible that this significant role could have gone to another major Hollywood star if he had more discipline.
Variety recently interviewed John Stamos. He explained that he was once passionate about the controversial religion and wanted to become a fully pledged member.
However, his dream was shattered when he was brutally rejected due to his wild antics. The Full House actor said that a girl in his acting class introduced him to the church as a teenager.
Stamos was eager to discover the church’s teaching because the girl who invited him was “hot.” However, he was also inspired by his acting idol, John Travolta, to go to the meeting.
The actor shared what happened when he entered the church: “She said, ‘You know, we’re all meeting at this address on Hollywood Boulevard. Come after [class]. I was working at my dad’s restaurant at the time, and I said, ‘Dad, I gotta, I gotta go.’ So I went, and it was the Scientology building!”
According to the organization, the E-meter is a device used to measure a person’s level of spirituality. Stamos continued by revealing why the meeting went from bad to worse: “They brought me in there, and there was this guy, and they had this E-meter, and I’m holding these two cans, so I started [saying], you know, ‘Hello… Peabody in the Wayback Machine. You know, Sherman and Peabody.”
The senior Scientologists were rapidly aggravated by his actions and kicked him out. He said: “They didn’t like that. I was just f—ing around so much that they said, ‘Get out. Get. Go.’ They just kinda kicked me out.”
He explained that, to this day, he wants to be as cool and charming as Travolta, but he has zero interest in the church. He continued: “Seeing [Grease] was like, ‘I wanna be that. I wanted to be John Travolta, and I still do. Well, minus the whatever it is that they do.”
In his best-selling memoir, If You Would Have Told Me, he wrote about the church axing him. He confessed: “I am whisked out of the room and sent on my merry way. I’m not Scientology material. Darn it.”
Stamos also revealed that he admires John Travolta, a Scientologist since 1975 and that the movie Grease shaped his acting career.
He wrote: “I don’t know the meaning of the word ‘charisma’ at that point, but I learn the essence encoded in the concept when Tra-volta moves like a panther parting the crowd in that iconic black suit with a pink shirt, white socks, and pocket square. He’s oozing charm and radiating an aura of greatness. That! I want to be that!”
Stamos chose a different path.
