About one year ago, Johnny Bobbitt, a homeless veteran became an overnight celebrity thanks to a kind gesture towards Kate McClure.
McClure and her boyfriend, Mark D’Amico, were moved by Bobbitt’s action and decided to set up a GoFundMe page for him.
Now, the couple is under investigation for refusing to give most of the $400,000 that donors raised for Bobbitt.
Miss McClure met Bobbitt after she was left stranded on a Philadelphia road and needed to purchase gas.
Bobbitt opted to help the stranger with the last $20 bill he had. The woman shared the story with the world, and rapidly a flood of donations came pouring in.
However, since receiving the large sum of cash, McClure and D’Amico have been living what seems to be the good life traveling to Las Vegas and California for fun-filled vacations — staying at fancy hotels and attending lavish events and purchasing luxury cars.
As for the army veteran, he is back living in the streets and using drugs again.
McClure claims that she spent $200,000 on the following items, a camper, a hotel room, an SUV, TV, laptop, and two cell phones.
The couple had promised the 15000 people who contributed to their cause that the first thing they would do with the money would be to purchase a house for the homeless man.
They never bought the home. Instead, they purchased a camper which was placed on a piece of land belonging to the McClure’s family.
The pair sold the camper and kicked the man out and never gave him a dime from the sale.
In a statement, GoFundMe spokesman Bartlett Jackson said the company was investigating the matter and added: “We will work to ensure that Johnny receives the help he deserves and that the donors’ intentions are honored.”
D’Amico swore that the man will never get the other half of the money because he is an addict.
He told a local media outlet: “Giving him all that money, it is never going to happen. I will burn it in front of him.”
Some commenters say that the rest of the money could be used to send him to a rehabilitation center.
