Chloe Fineman is facing brutal scrutiny after Vanity Fair shared a video featuring members of the Saturday Night Live troupe discussing their experiences on the program.
The lighthearted segment was intended as an opportunity for the actors to get better acquainted; however, the attempt at camaraderie took a dark turn after some inappropriate confessions.
During a series of questions about their past jobs, Fineman shared a story that many viewers found “deeply disturbing” and “predatory-adjacent,” prompting social media calls for consequences or at least an apology.
The backlash intensified when Vanity Fair was caught quietly editing the video to remove specific, controversial details.
The incident erupted over a seemingly innocent question: the cast was asked to explain why they were dismissed from a previous job. Fineman dropped a bombshell by saying: “I was fired as a camp counselor. I pantsed a boy.”
She attempted to justify the act by describing the child’s behavior toward her: “He would lift my shirt all the time. It was a different time. He would be like, ‘Hey, could I have a hug?’ And then I’d go to hug him, and he’d lift my shirt, like a dick. And then I was like, ‘I’m going to get back at you.’”
Fineman then described the moment she took “revenge” on the child to her co-stars, who appeared visibly stunned by the escalation. She revealed: “And so we were on a hike, and I was like, ‘Hey, Ollie, go look over there. It’s a hawk.’ He looked, and then I yanked his pants down, and then I was fired.”
The story became even more problematic after it was revealed that, following the public reaction, Vanity Fair scrubbed many details from the originally posted video, fearing a wider backlash.
In the original, unedited version of the video, Fineman provided graphic and demographic details that Vanity Fair later removed in an attempt to sanitize the segment.
According to viewers who saw the initial upload, Fineman noted she was 16 at the time, while the boy, Ollie, was only 6.
She stated: “He wasn’t wearing underpants, and then a giant school bus drove by.” She explained in the deleted footage: “The boy’s “little ding-a-ling was out.”
It has been confirmed that SNL cast members present, including Mikey Day and Sarah Sherman, were visibly uncomfortable as Fineman shared the jaw-dropping story.
One specific reaction was deemed too controversial for the final re-edit. Ashley Padilla remarked to Fineman in a now-deleted moment: “Oh, honey, I think you’re on a list somewhere.”
The public backlash was swift and heavy. The comment section on the YouTube video lit up with criticism, not only toward Fineman for her “cavalier” tone regarding the incident, but also toward Vanity Fair for attempting to “sanitize” the footage rather than addressing its content or apologizing for it.
Many commenters pointed out the double standard, questioning whether the story would have been aired at all if a male comedian said he pulled down the underwear of a little girl who was rude to him.
Some critics are calling the editing move a “cover-up” for what was essentially a confession of an inappropriate interaction between a teenager and a small child, and have therefore demanded an explanation from the publication for the cowardly decision.
Fineman, SNL, and Vanity Fair have yet to comment on the escalating debate; the story continues to dominate social media as the public grapples with the line between “edgy humor” and the admission of a serious boundary violation.
Some expect Fineman to share her side of the story on the next episode of Saturday Night Live.
