An American tourist by the name of Jerry Martin has decided to make it crystal clear — do not go to the Dominican Republic because the island has become hazardous to travelers’ health.
In May, the Florida man and his wife flew to the Dominican Republic for a romantic vacation because they were celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary.
Talking to local media, Mr. Martin said they stayed at the Caribe Club Princess Beach Resort & Spa in Punta Cana.
Martin confirmed to news station WTVT that very soon after arriving at the hotel, he fell very ill. The Floridian claimed that he was overcome with stomach pain as he was swimming in the pool.
The mystery illness caused the man to be running in an out the bathroom for the remainder of his one week trip.
He shared his horrible experience at the resort: “Fire in the bottom of my stomach. Pain, excruciating pain. We were down at the pool when it hit, and I had to go up and just lay down and hold my stomach. It was on fire.”
Upon his return to Florida, Martin has been in and out of the emergency room. The man is still in pain and is losing a lot of weight, and doctors still do not know what the cause of his illness is.
In the wake of the news that six Americans have died in the Carribean island, Martin warned others by saying, “don’t go, just don’t go.”
He went on to add: “I am scared, honestly. I told my wife we wouldn’t go out of the country again.”
Martin said that if the reports about the illnesses had surfaced prior, he would have never stepped foot in the country.
As it was previously reported, Miranda Schaup-Werner, a 41-year-old woman from Pennsylvania, lost her life while staying at the Grand Bahia Principe Hotel in La Romana.
So did Nathaniel Holmes, 63, and Cynthia Ann Day, 49, of Maryland who were staying at the same resort.
Families of 67-year-old Robert Wallace, a California businessman, have confirmed that he died on April 11 in Punta Cana after drinking from the mini bar at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Resort.
