Kate Middleton and Prince William, who are stepping in for Queen Elizabeth II, took part in the first royal duties at Buckingham Palace since March.
The event is already creating controversies. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the Queen has been living in a bubble and doing events virtually.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge met with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, and his wife, Olena Zelenska.
It is believed that the foursome spoke about the health crisis that has changed the world. There could have been some light-hearted conversations for the couples are around the same age and have young children.
Buckingham Palace issued this brief statement about the meeting that read: “The President of Ukraine and Mrs. Zelenska called upon The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at Buckingham Palace.”
Photos of Kate and Prince William taking on the high-level duty were shared on Instagram, where they created quite a commotion.
Many were baffled by the fact that the royal couple did not wear masks for the sit-down. This social media enthusiast asked this question: “WHERE ARE THEIR MASKS ☹️?”
Another royal fan pointed to the reason why the move could be dangerous: “They think sitting at the small table opposite protects them from droplets.”
Not everyone is happy about the fact that Kate and William are being criticized. A defender stepped in to explain: “For people who keep asking about masks, ?? they’re socially distanced, so no need to wear masks besides that they are following the government guidelines, so instead of asking, go to Google do some research it is better.”
This observer chimed in: “Everyone doing the most they can to ensure the best outcomes for all is of paramount importance. When people make excuses and think they are above the basic mechanics of science and how a virus works leads to poor outcomes. Masks work. Period. Leaders should model this and message it to everyone. Period.”
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were asked to listen to scientists and lead by example.
An Instagrammer wrote: “Yes: the British Royal Family is British and follow British guidelines not Trump. … ??♀️ who knew? (sarcasm)sort your own mess out; then you can stick your nose into other countries business.”
Despite this latest controversy, the pair has gained more fans in recent months, many people have praised the way they have handled things while taking care of three children.
