Meghan Markle found it challenging to remain neutral and not take sides as a working member of the royal family, a reporter has claimed.
After marrying Prince Harry in 2018, Meghan Markle formally became a member of the royal family and took part in royal duties.
However, it was a challenge to remain neutral when it came to political issues, as was noted by entertainment reporter Ashley Pearson who spoke about the time Meghan Markle attended a garden party in Dublin.
The defeat of a law which would have seen abortion rights repealed in Ireland, Meghan Markle did not hold back when sharing her own opinion of the issue.
The Duchess of Sussex was a champion for women’s rights and humanitarianism before she ever met Prince Harry, including her ambassadorship for World Vision which saw her make statements at global meetings of the United Nations.
Pearson said that Meghan Markle is “actually interested” in politics and engages with the issues being discussed and how they might play out and affect people’s lives.
Meghan’s “tendency” to pick sides in these situations caught Queen Elizabeth II and the rest of the royal family off-guard when people who had attended the garden party posted tweets relaying their conversations.
Catherine Noone, an Irish senator, tweeted, (and quickly deleted), to share with followers that she had a “great conversation with Meghan,” who had “congratulated” her on the defeat of the abortion bill.
Meghan Markle is believed to have said “that’s great” when hearing about the defeat, displaying her own political opinions and breaking royal protocol.
The politician first tweeted: the recent referendum result — she watched with interest and was pleased to see the result.”
Amid backlash, she posted a second tweet that clarified the matter. She wrote: “I should say she seemed pleased — she was interested and very measured, not political at all.”
She deleted the second tweet and later shared a picture with this message: “A pleasure to meet Prince Harry & the Duchess of Sussex at the British Ambassador’s Residence this evening. #harryandmeghan #royalcouple #meghanmarkle.”
Speaking to the 2020 Amazon Prime documentary, Meghan Markle: Changing Traditions, Ashley Pearson explained that the incident was foretelling that Meghan Markle was not going to be silenced by the royal family.
The royal expert stated: “Meghan Markle is not someone who just wants a pretty designer dress and a glass of champagne. She is actually engaged and interested in the politics and the storylines of where they’re going. In fact, she got in trouble not that long ago when she met someone in Ireland who was in Parliament, I believe, and congratulated them on the defeat of a bill that would have nullified abortion in Ireland, and said, “That’s great.”
She added: “She ended up getting in trouble because the Irish politician tweeted, ‘Oh, I had this great conversation with Meghan, and she congratulated us on the defeat of this initiative.”
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down from their positions as working members of the royal family last January and confirmed earlier this month that they would not return to the royal family.
Queen Elizabeth II issued a statement in response, confirming the news and saying that they still remained “much-loved” members of the family.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who have been very vocal on political and race issues, are set to sit down for an epic interview with Oprah Winfrey where they will reveal if the Queen was indeed silencing them.
