George W. Bush‘s endorsement was one of the most eagerly awaited ones during the 2024 presidential election, alongside Taylor Swift‘s.
The former president stayed on the sideline, refusing to back either candidate. George W. Bush’s decision to remain neutral was a source of frustration for many backers of Donald Trump, who questioned why he was not supporting their party’s candidate.
His neutrality also stirred Vice President Kamala Harris‘s backers, who highlighted the historical significance of her candidacy and brought attention to Trump’s legal issues.
However, his daughter, Barbara Bush, who had been apolitical all her life, broke the mold and came out for Kamala Harris.
Bush’s former vice president, Dick Cheney, announced his support for Harris.
The election is finally over, and former President Donald Trump will return to the White House in January.
With almost all the votes counted, George W. Bush and his rarely-heard wife, Laura Bush, have decided to comment on the election result and process.
The 43rd president and former first lady congratulated the billionaire businessman for his win. The statement began: “I congratulate President Trump on his election as 47th President of the United States of America, as well as Vice President-elect J.D. Vance and their families.”
In one emotionless and unremarkable sentence, Bush thanked President Joe Biden and Kamala Harris for their service.
He added: “I also thank President Biden and Vice President Harris for their service to our country.” This statement is humbling for Harris with no mention of the historic nature of her run.
Laura Bush and her husband went on to focus on what they believed truly mattered during the election — the smooth progress of the process thanks to thousands of Americans who gave their time and energy and the millions of voters who made their voices heard loud and clear.
The Republican couple said: “The strong turnout in this election is a sign of the health of our republic and the strength of our democratic institutions. Laura and I are grateful to the election officials, poll workers, and volunteers who oversaw a free, fair, safe, and secure election.”
They concluded by sharing a prayer for the nation and its leaders. The duo said: “We join our fellow citizens in praying for the success of our new leaders at all levels of government. May God continue to bless our great country.”
Some accept the statement, and others reject it. A few voters wanted Bush to play a more active role in the campaign. They were hoping that he would use his influence in American politics to support a candidate.
He is now being blasted for interjecting unnecessary words and thoughts into a complicated story already written and published in American history.
