Meghan Markle has a habit of stirring up friendly wars with King Charles III via business forays.
However, this week, she ignited a real firestorm that irked Prince William with one of her money-making deals. Markle has jumped into the wine business just in time for the summer.
Meghan Markle’s As Ever company successfully launched a Napa Valley rosé that sold out in minutes. PEOPLE reported: “Meghan Markle’s first splash into alcohol from her As Ever brand has sold out. On July 1, the 2023 Napa Valley Rosé from As Ever sold out less than an hour after it went live to shop at 8 a.m. PT/11 a.m. ET on Wine.AsEver.com.”
In a press release shared with PEOPLE, As Ever described the wine as: “light, fresh, and effortlessly celebratory and thoughtfully curated by Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. The wine was priced at $30 a bottle and sold in sets of three bottles ($90), half cases ($159), and full cases ($300).”
While many rushed to purchase multiple bottles or even cases of wine, the public’s reaction was mixed. One person who surely had no interest in the drop was Prince William.
The future King of United Kingdom was said to be floored by Markle’s decision to launch the new business venture on his mother’s birthday.
According to royal sources, Prince William found Markle’s stunt to cash in and grab headlines on Princess Diana‘s birthday particularly troublesome and cruel.
A Palace insider claimed via The Sun: “It’s not lost on Prince William that Meghan has launched an alcohol brand on his mother’s birthday, the very mum he lost in a drink driving tragedy.”
Royal commentator and reporter Kinsey Schofield, who made the revelation through The Sun, added: “Timing an alcohol launch to Diana’s birthday wasn’t just a misstep; it was borderline cruel. To claim ignorance here doesn’t hold up—it wasn’t just insensitive. It felt like a betrayal of the very narrative she’s working so hard to craft.”
Markle seems unfazed by Prince William’s feelings and thoughts. With Prince Harry‘s backing, she is already celebrating the launch’s success and preparing to unveil a series of new products.
Markle, fully aware that many are intrigued by her next move, had her team share some fascinating details with Newsweek.
A staff member said: “There’s still a level of frustration that the supplies of the wine did not last long, but the batch was significant. It’s quite extraordinary how it’s sold out. We thought it would sell out, but for it to happen so quickly again is testament to the popularity of the brand and the duchess in the U.S.”
The insider continued: “Significant volumes were shifted, and the next step won’t be restocking the 2023 vintage because that’s now all sold, but they will replenish stock with a different vintage and other types as well.”
The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Sussex rarely see eye to eye on issues.
