Sinead McNamara, a 20-year-old Australian Instagram model, was found dead on a superyacht in Greece where she was working.
McNamara, who has close to 23,000 followers on the photo-sharing website, was completing the last day of her working holiday on the $190-million yacht of 87-year-old Mexican billionaire businessman Alberto Baillères, who made a portion of his fortune in mining. Baillères was reportedly not on the yacht at the time of the tragic incident.
The young woman was found unconscious and twisted in rope. McNamara’s cause of death has not been revealed by Greek authorities, but sources close to the investigation say that the model may have taken her own life.
The rumored suicide is a shock for her relatives because she had appeared in good spirits the last time they reached her.
Her family has also revealed that she was supposed to meet her mother and sister in Greece at the end of her gig. Her last update on Instagram was upbeat and dated from August 27, one day before she died.
The post has become a space for people to pay tribute to McNamara. Trolls have also made their presence felt by pushing some awful conspiracy theories about what supposedly led to her death.
A cryptic message posted two weeks probably fueled some of the chatter. It read, “My head is all over the shop today ?? take me back to this where my only worry was not cracking my skull open.”
It was accompanied by a photo of herself on a quad bike looking happy. Some of her fans think she was murdered because they say she was “living her best life, so, why would she end it?”
Officials appear unconvinced by this theory. One of them told The Sunday Times, “By the looks of it, she took her life. We expect the autopsy to verify this in the coming days.”
This is probably not enough to end the speculations. Most supporters do argue that the family needs to be left alone in the middle of this tragedy.
Friday, a person noticed McNamara tied in a rope and immediately called the doctor on the boat. The model died in the helicopter on the way to the hospital.
