Melania Geymonat and her girlfriend, Chris, were brutally beaten and robbed by a group of young teenagers as they were traveling through London, England via a double-decker London N31 bus.
According to British authorities, the incident took place on May 30. The lesbian couple was returning home after a night out in West Hampstead, North West London.
Geymonat, a Ryanair flight attendant, told London Metropolitan Police that she and her American girlfriend, Chris, were harassed by the gang of teenagers who demanded that they kiss so they can watch.
When they refused, the group of alleged criminals started making crude sexual gestures and throwing objects at them.
Things went from bad to worse — Geymonat, a young doctor, originally from Uruguay, who is currently employed as a stewardess on a sabbatical to Europe, told several media outlets that she and Chris were attacked.
The two women were punched and left bloodied and bruised.
In an interview, Geymonat shared her story: “They wanted us to kiss so they could watch us. I tried to defuse the situation because I’m not a confrontational person; I told them to please leave us alone as Chris wasn’t feeling well.”
The physician went on to explain that Chris was physically assaulted and she decided to defend her: “The next thing I could remember was Chris in the middle of them, and they were beating her. I was pulling her back and trying to defend her, so they started beating me up.”
She added: “The next thing I know is, I’m also being punched. I got dizzy at the sight of my blood and fell back. I don’t really remember whether or not I lost consciousness.”
It has been confirmed by the Scotland Yard that they are currently investigating the “homophobic attack” that took place on the N31 bus at 2.30am. Thus far, the detectives have arrested four teenagers, all males between the ages 15 and 18.
Many have tracked down Geymonat on social media to show her love and support after the attack.
This person had the following to say: “The emphasis in this whole string of comments should be on the major violation of laws against assault. In countries all over the world, the law of human rights should protect all against physical harm. I know of no true religion that justifies harming others except in self-defense. When we channel the topic away from cultural, sexual, gender differences and support the rule of law, we should get uniformity of support for the injured and wronged.”
Another social media user showed love and compassion: “I was so sad and so outraged to hear about your experience. I want to send you my sympathy for this horrible victimization and express the hope that your attackers are made to pay. I also want to congratulate you both for standing up for your rights as human beings! While this is a horrible thing to suffer, you are inspiring many others to stand up too.”
Queer women around the globe are using this incident to say that they will not be silenced.
