Christine Blasey Ford almost derailed the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh for a seat on the Supreme Court with her epic testimony in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee during the September and October 2018 hearings.
The professor of psychology accused the judge of sexual assault in an emotional testimony that divided the country in a major way. Despite the liberal backlash, Republicans remained united and were able to get the desired result.
A new book by conservative writers Mollie Hemingway and Carrie Severino titled Justice on Trial: The Kavanaugh Confirmation and the Future of the Supreme Court, that will be released on Tuesday, claims that Kavanaugh had strong support in high places.
According to the two authors, First Lady Melania Trump told President Donald Trump that Blasey Ford was lying during the testimony. Melania told the President, “You know that woman is lying, don’t you?”
The authors use this unexpected example to prove that Kavanaugh’s accuser failed to convince many people Around the country.
The authors wrote: “Her credibility, if anything, was viewed as stronger because of her lapses in memory and because the odder parts to the story, such as her description of how she came to tell her husband about the assault. Despite the holes in her story, the media clung to these details.”
The book also covers the fact that the episode had unforeseen ramifications for people like Maine Republican Senator Susan Collins, a pivotal vote in the confirmation, who is up for reelection in 2020. One of Collins’ neighbors called her a “rape apologist.”
Collins said: “Our Supreme Court confirmation process has been in steady decline for more than 30 years. One can only hope that the Kavanaugh nomination is where the process has finally hit rock bottom.”
The process was very messy, and Kavanaugh prevailed. His behavior as part of the highest court in the land has surprised some. He is less of an ideologue than many expected him to be and has scored points with some people like Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg by hiring only female clerks.
Ginsburg said earlier this month during a sit-down at Georgetown Law School: “There is a very important first on the Supreme Court this term and it’s thanks to our new justice, Justice Kavanaugh. Justice Kavanaugh made history by bringing on board an all-female law clerk crew. Thanks to his selections, the court has this term, for the first time ever, more women than men serving as law clerks.”
The White House has declined to comment on the first lady’s alleged remark.
