A woman, who worked in the medical field, Sonia Acevedo, is the first person to die just days after receiving the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine.
Her family is demanding answers, and an autopsy is set to take place this week to find out what caused Acevedo’s death.
Acevedo was an employee in the pediatrics department at the Portuguese Institute of Oncology in Porto.
For ten years, she had worked at the health institution that focuses on cancer treatment, research, and education.
Along with several other staff members, Acevedo took the vaccine on December 30, and 48 hours later, she suddenly died.
According to her employer, after receiving the Pfizer vaccination, she did not feel any pain and was not struck with undesirable side effects.
Acevedo happily changed her profile picture on Facebook after getting the vaccine. She shared a selfie wearing a face mask, and her caption read: “Covid-19 vaccinated.”
Sonia Acevedo was doing well and attended a family gathering on New Year’s Eve where they shared a lovely dinner.
The health worker and mother of two, who resided with her family in Maia, traveled to her partner’s home in Trofa to spend the New Year, where she died suddenly at the age of 41.
The mourning father of the Portuguese health worker is puzzled and angry over his daughter’s “sudden death” 48 hours after receiving the jab.
In an emotional interview with Correio da Manha, Abilio Acevedo explained: “She was okay. She hadn’t had any health problems.”
He added: “She had the Covid-19 vaccine, but she didn’t have any symptoms. I don’t know what happened. I just want answers. I want to know what led to my daughter’s death.”
Sonia Acevedo’s father said he received the heartbreaking news around 11 a.m. Friday. The devastated man said he could not comprehend how can she be dead because hours prior, they were sitting eating and laughing together as they rang in the new year.
He added: “My daughter left home, and I never saw her alive again.” Sonia Acevedo’s daughter, Vania Figueredo, briefly spoke to local media and revealed that her mother only complained about the “normal” discomfort around the spot where the needle jabbed her but was doing well.
The Portuguese Institute of Oncology said in a statement: “With regards to the sudden death of an operational assistant from the Porto IPO on January 1, 2021, the Board of Directors confirms the event and expresses sincere regret to family and friends in the certainty that this loss is also felt here.”
It added: “The explanation of the cause of death will follow the usual procedures in these circumstances.”
Sonia Acevedo was among 538 Porto IPO workers who received the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Portugal’s Ministry of Health is aware of the situation.
There are half a million people with COVID-19 in Portugal, and 7,118 have died.
