Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, shocked many when they left their royal duties in early 2020. The power couple opted to go live independently in California.
From that moment, their life has been filled with big deals with mega companies like Netflix, Spotify, and Penguin Random House. They have become influential celebrities with a global reach.
A famed royal expert is now saying that the former American actress did not really like her role in the Royal Family. According to Tina Brown, Markle felt that she was a star and needed to be treated as such by the Royal Family.
Markle reportedly got that impression after a successful tour in Australia in 2018. Unfortunately for her, she found out that the British monarchy is more of a team effort instead of a one-woman show.
When returning to the UK, she was not congratulated on the job well done. According to Brown, feeling underappreciated, Markle concluded: “that the monarchy likely needed her more than she needed them.” Moreover, she felt “bigger than what she was allowed to do in the monarchy.”
In her book The Palace Papers, Brown wrote: “She had starred in the equivalent of a blockbuster film and wanted her leading-lady status to be reflected in lights.”
In an interview with 60 Minutes Australia, Brown explained: “That was something that puzzled the royal household tremendously. Their tour of Australia was a wild success, more successful than Kate and William’s, in terms of crowds and the adulation.”
Brown continued: “She [Meghan] wanted to be able to talk about the causes that she cared about as her, as opposed to being a representative figure in the monarchy. There was a real sense of disappointment when she came home that somehow she was a star beyond, you know, anything one had seen before, except for Diana, really, on this tour. I guess it was the star power essentially that she felt now was bigger than what she was allowed to do in the monarchy.”
One thing that seems to unite Prince Harry and Meghan Markle is the feeling that they were not appreciated for their true contribution to the monarchy. This was a major factor in their brutal exit.
Prince Harry is expected to cover those feelings in his book Spare, which will be out on January 10. The renegade royal has felt all of his life that he was more than a “spare.”
King Charles III seems to continue on the same path and is not ready to give The Duke and Duchess of Sussex what they truly desire. The Sovereign is putting the monarchy above personal feelings and individual needs for gratification.
The epic adoration that the Sussexes are seeking will have to come from other places.
