Meghan Markle and her husband, Prince Harry, are having a better week than expected.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are probably feeling vindicated after the latest scandal that has erupted in the Royal Family.
Since leaving the British monarchy in early 2020, the power couple has been saying that the Royal Family has a race problem.
They famously shared their story with the world during a bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey. They claimed that they had experienced racism directly in the Palace walls.
A family member reportedly joked about the skin color of Archie while his mother was pregnant with him. Defenders of the monarchy insisted that they were wrong and that the monarchy did not see color.
The revelations even forced the heir to the throne Prince William to tell reporters: “We are very much not a racist family.”
The Royal Family then launched visits to former British colonies in countries like Jamaica and Barbados.
However, those trips did not go well because the royals were forced to face questions about the role of the monarchy in slavery and colonialism.
King Charles III, trying to learn from the mistakes of the past, has made diversity and inclusivity cornerstones of his reign. There is often a wide gap between lofty goals and reality.
This week, reality struck back in a powerful way. Lady Susan Hussey, who is Prince William’s godmother, refused to accept the fact that a Black activist told her that she is British.
The confidant of Camilla, Queen Consort, claimed during the awkward exchange that Ngozi Fulani must be from somewhere else.
The race row became a trending topic on social media, and the member of the Royal Household was forced to resign. Prince William even released a damning statement on the matter.
It read: “Obviously, I wasn’t there, but racism has no place in our society. The comments were unacceptable, and it is right that the individual has stepped aside with immediate effect.”
Some are wondering if the Sussexes will cover racism in their Netflix documentary that will premiere next week.
Now commentators are saying that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were right all along. Dr. Shola Mos-Shogbamimu wrote on Twitter: “Meghan Markle and Prince Harry told you of racism in the Royal Family & household. But she was vilified, abused & violated for speaking the truth. Ngozi Fulani’s experience with Lady Susan Hussey wasn’t isolated, one-off, or a ‘bad apple’ at Buckingham Palace. You can’t reform this.”
Kerry Kennedy, who will bless the couple with the prestigious Robert F. Kennedy Ripple of Hope Award, said that they were getting it for confronting the race problem in the British monarchy directly.
She said: “They went to the oldest institution in U.K. history and told them what they were doing wrong, that they couldn’t have structural racism within the institution; that they could not maintain a misunderstanding about mental health. They knew that if they did this, there would be consequences, that they would be ostracized, they would lose their family and their position within this structure, and that people would blame them for it. They have done it anyway because they believed they couldn’t live with themselves if they didn’t question this authority. I think they have been heroic in taking this step.”
It will be interesting to see if the couple will weigh in on the controversy during the big speech at the ceremony on December 6.
