Donald Trump has weakened in the eyes of many Republicans since losing the 2020 presidential election.
The billionaire continued to climb on the list of personae non grata with some of the fiery comments he later made about the deadly January 6th attack on the United States Capitol.
Trump has left many frustrated with his decision to mingle in the 2022 midterm elections. The TV mogul’s penchant for unprepared and controversial candidates, including Kari Lake and Herschel Walker, left the GOP bruised and beaten.
Trump discovered a portion of the truth when he launched his third bid for the White House.
According to official reports, the crowd at the event was timid, and he has yet to receive enthusiastic financial support from big-pocket donors.
According to Atlantic journalist McKay Coppins, the truth is that members of Trump’s party do not like him.
Behind closed doors in the House and the Senate, some elected officials are willing to say what is on their hearts, which is horrific.
Former Rep. Peter Meijer (R-Mich.) told Coppins that he has spoken to many conservatives who wish for the permanent ending of Trump.
Meijer said that people who are so-called supporters of Trump, who will happily wear his famous MAGA hat, appear on the campaign trail with him, and as soon the event is over, will ask for the death of the former president.
The former elected official shared: “You have a lot of folks who are just wishing for [Trump’s] mortal demise. I want to be clear: I’m not in that camp. But I’ve heard from a lot of people who will go onstage and put on the red hat and then give me a call the next day and say, ‘I can’t wait until this guy dies.'”
Meijer was amongst the few right-leaning officials who slammed his party for not taking “responsibility for their lies about election fraud” after the 2021 United States Capitol attack.
Meijer also voted to impeach Donald Trump alongside nine other Republicans. Coppins appeared on CNN to promote the piece and confirmed Trump has many people who wish him ill and added: “I was taken aback by how often I heard this. I thought it was kind of a morbid, dark joke at first. But I heard it so often that it started to become clear that this was actually what a lot of Republicans believe, and it just speaks to the desperation in the party.”
He also explained that a large group of Republicans have Trump fatigue and have no desire to see him near the White House but lack the courage to confront him.
The journalist said: “They all wanted him gone, but nobody wanted to confront him directly. There is just this fear that if they go after him or if they try to rally around somebody else, they’ll spark a backlash from his base.”
Trump is still favored to win the nomination for president in 2024.
