King Charles III has yet to celebrate his first year on the throne, and he is dealing with a monumental health crisis that has rattled the century-old institution.
In January, the Monarch underwent surgery for an enlarged prostate. The surgery went well, but The King was asked to stay an extra night for further exams.
Then came the painful news: King Charles was diagnosed with an unknown form of cancer. In a statement, doctors confirmed that they caught the disease early and he is undergoing cancer treatments.
Immediately, the big and tough questions started flooding The Palace — will King Charles abdicate, and is Prince William ready for that stressful job?
Well, one royal expert was quick to give some insights on the matter. Author Hugo Vickers, a close friend of the Royal Family, who penned the book Coronation, spoke to Page Six to say that King Charles will never abdicate because he was destined by God to be King.
Additionally, it is a role that King Charles has been preparing for the past 74 years. The writer explained: “Charles will never abdicate. He’s an anointed king and he’s promised to serve to the end — and I don’t think he would want to [abdicate].”
Vickers went on to speak about the possibility of Prince William having another role while his father would remain King. The royal expert brought up the eldest son of George III who was named Prince Regent when “his father was deemed mentally unstable to rule in 1811.”
He shared that no matter the decision, Charles will remain King and added: “William could become Prince Regent if Charles could not fulfill his duties, but Charles would remain king in name.”
For those who need more clarity on the abdication chatter — King Charles did not beat around the bush — he is taking it slow as he undergoes treatment, but he is still working in the meantime via Zoom and telephone calls.
King Charles, who is more interested in having his wife, Queen Camilla, as a temporary successor, has decided to deputize her to take over all the top and most high-profile royal engagements that he cannot perform.
Prince William has reached out to The Palace to let them know he is ready to serve. A Kensington Palace source told Page Six: “That it is “likely” that Prince William would step in for his father on some engagements.”
Sources have also revealed to The Daily Mail that Prince William has offered his service to King Charles. Thus far, King Charles has shut the door and prefers to do what he can or heavily rely on Queen Camilla, who has been feeling the weight of the monarchy on her shoulders.
Insiders have revealed, to The Mail, that King Charles sees no need to turn to his son because he is beyond proud of the way Queen Camilla is handling the complicated and burdensome task of walking in his shoes.
