An alligator cost Cassandra Cline, 45, her life as she was trying to protect her beloved dog.
According to witnesses, on Monday morning, Cline was out in Sea Pines, a gated community in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
The woman was enjoying a stroll near a lagoon when it seems that an alligator attacked her pet.
Cline tried to save the dog but was bitten by the eight-foot alligator that eventually dragged her into the water.
According to The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, several people, who witnessed the horrific scene, were quick to dial 911 pleading for the authorities to come to help the woman in dire need.
Blake Smith, one of Cline’s neighbors, told local media that the giant alligators had been spotted in yards and swimming pools in that area.
Mr. Smith went on to reveal that the staff members at Sea Pines worked diligently to get rid of the dangerous animals.
He said this about the sad incident: “I had waited for about 30 minutes, then I started hearing the rumors about what happened down the road from here.”
Smith went on to explain why he was shocked by the news of the killer alligator: “It’s so odd because this is the only time we’ve heard about an aggressive alligator around a human in the five years that we have been living here.”
He praised the people working to keep Sea Pines safe but confessed that he is a bit worried because he has a young child.
The father shared: “They do a good job. This is just a sad incident. I have a young son, so it is kind of concerning to see something like this could happen here.”
Sea Pines explained in a brief statement that they are working with the authorities “to ensure the necessary access to the site while the investigation is underway.”
The community wants to see some concrete measures put in place.
