Collin Daniel Richards, a criminal from Ames, Iowa; has been accused of killing Celia Barquin Arozamena, a college golf star with a brilliant future.
The body of Arozamena, a well-known Iowa State University golfer, was discovered on Monday morning.
According to a statement that was released by the police, several people dialed 911 and reported a suspicious bag that was spotted at the Coldwater Golf Links.
When the authorities arrived on the scene of the crime, they discovered the lifeless body in a pond at the golf course.
As the police were searching the area, they noticed a man walking near the location where the body was discovered.
The man, whose initials are D.B., was questioned by the police, and he made some rather shocking confessions.
The male told the police that Richards was a friend and they shared a temporary residence for some time. D.B. asked the police: “What did he do to her?”
He went on to say that recently Richards told him that he “had an urge to rape and kill a woman.” Richards had an image on his Facebook page which is a meme about coffee that says, “Let’s Commit a Murder.”
It has been confirmed that Arozamena died after suffering from “several stab wounds.”
Richards, 22, has been charged with murder in the first degree, a Class A felony, and is being held on a $5 million cash bond.
The judge explained the decision in a message that read: “The state believes him to be a flight risk, also believes him to be a danger to the community.”
Jamie Pollard, the ISU Athletic Director, who is mourning the death of Arozamena had this to say: “It is with a very heavy heart that I share thoughts on the tragic passing of our former women’s golfer Celia Barquin Arozamena.”
Pollard went on to state: “Although the details of her sudden passing are currently being investigated, it is believed she was the victim of a senseless act of random violence committed by a total stranger, in broad daylight, while she was playing golf at the Coldwater Golf Course. This sad situation cuts at the very core of our community, our institution and especially our athletics program.”
Richards is set to appear at a preliminary hearing on September 28.
