Fifth-Grader Turns Into A Hero By Helping Low-Income Families And Sharing Wisdom With His Mom

Obocho Peters Sasha Thrift Shop

Obocho Peters, an 11-year-old boy from New York City, made headlines when it was reported that he had established a second-hand store aimed at helping poverty-stricken people.

Obocho first came up with the idea for the thrift shop when his mother, Sasha Peters, denied buying him the desired toys because she could not afford them.

According to the fifth-grader, that inspired him to find a way to get the means for the toys himself. Then the young boy reportedly started by gathering all the belongings he did not need anymore and selling them.

Obocho states that at that moment, he realized other families must face the same challenges, and since then, it was his mission to help the community grow.

The boy also explained that he was inspired by all the superheroes helping to make the world a better place, and he wanted to be a hero by helping his mother.

The mother of the boy, who takes care of her son alone, supported Obocho’s idea from the beginning, and with her help, he created a website.

Obocho stated she did so because a parent had to nurture kids when they come up with ideas. Besides, the young entrepreneur has taken up some business-related courses on top of his school classes.

He explained during a Good Morning America visit: “I realized that other families must face these same challenges when taking care of their children. That idea turned into the mission I have today — to help the community GROW. I was inspired by all the superheroes helping to make the world a better place. I wanted to be a hero myself by helping my mom.”

The mother added: “You have to nurture kids when they come up with ideas and you have to pay attention to everything they say because they’re telling you how to groom them to be a better version of themselves.”

It appears that Obocho’s instinct was correct because after he began by launching the online Obocho’s Closet in 2018, the business had grown so much that the boy was able to establish a real-life second-hand store in Brooklyn.

The new store opened doors in December on its creator’s birthday. The young boy has become an inspiration for many.

A commenter stated: “This is so beautiful!! You got this buddy, never ever stop!!❤️❤️”

The mom and son have built a little following online after all the recent media attention they received and they have addressed hot topics like people going on panic buying in the coronavirus era.
