Former President Barack Obama and his Vice President Joe Biden made history and melted hearts while at it.
The famous Democrats took part in their first campaign fundraiser together, where they broke all records by bringing in over $11m.
The virtual event was watched by 175,000 grassroots contributors that donated $7.6m. Obama also made an appearance alongside Biden at a private online event for big donors and collected $3.4m.
The Democrat from Illinois did not hold back and obliterated President Donald Trump during the virtual political event.
Obama also warned voters against being “complacent or smug” about the 2020 presidential race as they did in 2016 when millions stayed home, and Hillary Clinton lost to Trump.
The former president explained to Democrats and Independents: “We can’t be complacent or smug or say it’s so obvious this president hasn’t done a good job. Look. He won once.”
Obama stated: “What we have seen over the last couple of years is a White House enabled by Republicans in Congress and a media structure that supports them that has not just differed in terms of policy but has gone at the very foundations of who we are and who we should be.”
He went on to say: “Unlike our current president, we recognize that we have a public health crisis going on. It means that we have to show restraint and how we structure campaigns has to be different and take that into account. And we have to listen to public health experts. Poor Dr. Fauci, who has to testify and then see his advice flouted by the person who he’s working for. We’ve got to pay attention to what the public health experts say when it comes to this campaign season.”
The Hawaii native spoke to the Americans affected by the coronavirus that is ravaging the country, the millions out of work, and those protesting and demanding changes.
Obama said, “help is on the way if we do the work,” and pleaded with Americans to vote for Biden because he will “heal this country and get it back on track.”
The exchange between Obama and the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee ended in a very touching manner. Obama told Biden: “Love you, Joe.” Biden responded by: “Love you too, pal.”
Their supporters say that they miss this kind of bonding in the current political environment. Biden is leading in polling averages by a margin unseen in recent presidential races.
Democrats are still worried about a potential 2016 repeat.
