Internet users have dug up Montel Williams‘s official statement confirming that he did indeed date vice president-elect Kamala Harris after the former couple’s photos went viral.
Earlier today, a Twitter user shared a series of photos of Harris and the TV host attending a red carpet event together.
The ex-pair was pictured at the Eighth Annual Race to Erase Multiple Sclerosis event in the spring of 2001.
At the time, Harris was working for the San Francisco City Attorney’s Office. The romance was short-lived, in 2002, Williams was seen with another woman, while Harris was marching on with her impressive career.
Some people were confused, thinking Beyoncé posed with Williams and Harris at the event.
The third person in the photos is the talk-show host’s daughter, Ashley Williams. Others assumed Harris was dating R&B singer and pastor Montell Jordan, famous for the hit song “This Is How We Do It.”
It seems that people on social media were not aware that the California Senator had a life and dating history before marrying soon-to-be Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff in 2014.

The Twitter user had this caption for the viral tweet: “The fact that Kamala Dated Montel and it seems like no one remembers lol.”
The tweet has been trending for hours, and there has been a variety of responses.

An online user had this reaction: “I owned a Montell Jordan album when I was in high school. Man that brings back memories.”
This defender of Harris noted: “Why in the world does it matter? They both look great in the photos… We all dated other people in our past. We remember we just focused on her career, her politics, and her character. It’s shameful when a woman accomplishes something, and it leads us to discuss who she’s had in our bed… focus we have a black VP FEMALE let’s focus on her future, not some man.”
Williams did take to social media to defend President-elect Joe Biden‘s future VP, by writing this after a tabloid shared a story about him: “@KamalaHarris and I briefly dated about 20 years ago when we were both single. So what? I have great respect for Sen. Harris. I have to wonder if the same stories about her dating history would have been written if she were a male candidate?”
He added: “Story flat out mistakes my service record and my party affiliation. Accurate info is easily found on google.”
Harris is the first woman to reach this position in American history.
