There has been a lot of noise about Prince William‘s decision not to travel to Australia to support the female English soccer team.
The team known as the Lionesses went head-to-head with Spain during the World Cup final. Prince William, who is the president of the Football Association (FA), left a sour taste in the mouths of English soccer fans for his refusal to fly to Australia to cheer for his country.
Prince William’s move was called foolish and sexist. Others deemed him lazy. Some of the monarchy’s most ardent supporters including Piers Morgan turned on Prince William for not taking the trip.
English people grew angrier and felt outright insulted upon discovering Queen Letizia of Spain and her daughter, Infanta Leonor, flew Down Under to cheer the Spanish ladies.
Some royal watchers joked that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle should have traveled to Australia to root for the country.
Aware of the outrage, Prince William made sure his daughter, Princess Charlotte, was by his side in a brief video where they wished the British team all the best.
The heir to the throne said: “Lionesses, we want to send you a huge good luck for tomorrow. We’re sorry we can’t be there in person, but we’re so proud of everything you’ve achieved and the millions you’ve inspired here and around the world. So go out there tomorrow and really enjoy yourselves.” Princess Charlotte, holding a football as she sat next to her father on a bench, added: “Good luck, Lionesses.”
Sadly for England, they lost the brutal match by a score of 1-0, despite brilliantly stopping a penalty. Prince William dropped another message for the ladies, saying: “Although it’s the result none of us wanted, @Lionesses you have done yourselves and this nation proud. Your spirit & drive have inspired so many people and paved the way for generations to come. Thank you for the footballing memories. Congratulations to Spain. W”
The real reason why Prince William and his wife, Kate Middleton, or any other members of the Royal Family could not have attended the soccer game of the year has been revealed and all the fingers are pointed at King Charles III and the institution’s archaic protocols.
The Mirror explained that the heir is not supposed to visit countries where his father is the head of state before him, per protocol.
The media outlet shared: “Some reports claim that a matter of Royal protocol is blocking William from attending. King Charles, who became Australia’s head of state after the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II, has not yet visited the country. That would mean that William cannot constitutionally visit the country before his father.”
Some wonder if an exception was not possible.
