It took some time, but King Charles III has finally done what Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were pleading with him to do — acknowledge his two grandchildren, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
However, the long-awaited public acknowledgment of the British and American children was accompanied by a major decision that must have certainly upset Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
In the famous bombshell interview that Prince Harry and Markle did with Oprah Winfrey, the former actress revealed that she believed that King Charles and The Firm were not eager to give her son a royal title because they did not want to pay for his security.
She also hinted that they were dithering with the process because he is biracial. However, experts were quick to point out that King Charles had to first ascend to the throne for his grandchildren to receive the prestigious privilege.
Once Prince Charles became monarch, Prince Harry and Markle, who had stepped down from their royal duties, did interviews and appeared in a Netflix series to denounce the monarchy.
They made it abundantly clear that they did not want any associations with British royalty. They shocked the world by revealing that they still wanted their children to have the titles they were destined to receive.
King Charles, who was slammed by the Sussex, ignored their demands for several months and instead gave Prince William, Kate Middleton, and their three children: all working royals — their birthright titles.
Prince Harry and Markle took matters into their own hands and announced that their son would be known as Prince Archie and their daughter, Princess Lilibet.
In a statement, Prince Harry and Markle, who have made the royals look like evildoers and painted the monarchy as a shameful and archaic institution, said it was the children’s right. They went on to reveal that a solution was reached with King Charles.
A spokesperson for The Duke and Duchess of Sussex told PEOPLE at the time: “The children’s titles have been a birthright since their grandfather became monarch. This matter has been settled for some time in alignment with Buckingham Palace.”
Months have gone by, and King Charles has never confirmed or denied the claim. His Majesty had yet to make any moves, which indicated that he had accepted the titles — that is, until now.
Recently, King Charles oversaw some major changes to the official website for the British royal family. For the first time, King Charles acknowledged Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet by including them in a short statement about their parents’ decision to step down from family duties.
The statement reads: “As announced in January 2020, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have stepped back as working members of The Royal Family. The couple married in St. George’s Chapel, Windsor, on May 19, 2018, and have two children: Prince Archie of Sussex and Princess Lilibet of Sussex.”
Prince Harry and Markle will not be thrilled by The King‘s second move: he decided to erase Prince Archie and Prince Lilibet’s polished biographies from the site.
The couple, who had previously enjoyed their own separate pages on the website, have suffered an insulting major downgrade. Markle and the former soldier now have one joint page, titled The Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
The King also announced on the website that the pair will not be welcomed back as working royals during his reign.
