The Impulse for Extravagance
Melania Trump and her husband, President Donald Trump, are clearly not like any ordinary married couple.
As an extremely privileged billionaire couple, high-profile business owners, and politicians, the duo appears to have out-of-this-world needs and impulses, often undertaking actions that are beyond the comprehension of ordinary humans.
Unlike most couples who value simple pleasures, Donald and Melania Trump prefer an emphasis on luxury, making opulence part of their identity and personal brand.
Trump Bringing Mar-a-Lago to Washington
According to a confirmed report, Donald and Melania Trump sought to make the White House feel more like home. They planned major renovations to bring Mar-a-Lago style to the White House.
This included suggestions for a ballroom, ornate features, gold-accented ceilings, statues, and manicured gardens — reflecting Mar-a-Lago’s decor.
Trump hired his Mar-a-Lago “gold guy,” cabinetmaker John Icart, to implement his grandiose vision.
Trump plans a 90,000-square-foot ballroom above the East Wing, featuring gold details. He wants Trump-themed art and merchandise displayed throughout the residence.
Additionally, Trump rearranged portraits of past leaders to display larger paintings of himself throughout the White House.
Flashy is central to the Trump identity. A source told PEOPLE the Trumps feel out of place in Washington; their hearts remain in Florida.
The person in the know claimed: “Donald and Melania would prefer to be in Palm Beach, so instead they are ‘bringing Mar-a-Lago to Washington.’ Their plans for the White House are being implemented to remind them of Mar-a-Lago. That way, when they aren’t in Palm Beach, they are there in their mind.”
Another source said the Trumps are proud of their Mar-a-Lago decor, often showing it off to wealthy friends; it is unsurprising that they want a replica in D.C.
Besides Barron Trump, Mar-a-Lago is their greatest accomplishment and source of pride. The insider shared: “So it makes sense they would make changes to the historic presidential building. Anytime Melania and Donald can make the White House feel more like Mar-a-Lago, they will. They love Mar-a-Lago. Not only is it their home, but Donald personally created much of the current decor and takes pride in living there and showing it to other people.”
White House and Camp David Are Not to Trump’s Standards of Luxury
Another insider said Trump was never happy in the White House or Camp David because they did not suit his comfort or standards.
The person claimed: “Donald was never happy with many of the spaces the U.S. president frequents — including parts of the White House and Camp David.”
Trump spent taxpayers’ money to renovate the Rose Garden, paving over greenery for a cement patio to mirror Mar-a-Lago.
Quest for Luxury in the Face of Budget Cuts
Many criticized the millions spent on White House renovations while federal budgets were cut.
The administration cut health care for 17 million people, slashed food stamps for children, tripled rent for housing aid recipients, and promoted Medicaid work requirements, resulting in lost coverage for vulnerable groups.
This relentless focus on luxury starkly contrasts with the administration’s message of support for average Americans.
Critics from both sides of the political aisle argue that Trump is out of touch, spending millions on luxuries while ignoring the economic struggles of many Americans. Furthermore, many backers of the Trump presidency are calling the moves inappropriate, unnecessary, and terrible for optics in the current economic atmosphere.
For some observers the moves show a real lack of empathy for average Americans.
