The Arrest
Tyler Robinson, the man charged with assassinating political commentator Charlie Kirk, was turned over to Utah authorities, though the circumstances differed from public assumptions about his arrest.
The parents of the 22-year-old alleged assassin contacted a local pastor after their son made threats to harm himself.
According to police, Tyler Robinson’s father, Matt Robinson, recognized his son in photos circulating in the media and reached out for help.
Following this realization, the father confronted his son, leading to an argument during which Tyler confessed to the killing.
After being confronted, Tyler Robinson threatened that he would not turn himself in and preferred to kill himself rather than go to prison. This suicide threat prompted his father to seek immediate assistance.
Instead of contacting the police, Matt Robinson reached out to his son’s youth pastor, who is both a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and affiliated with the U.S. Marshals Service fugitive task force.
The pastor then contacted a deputy with the federal agency, leading to the FBI’s arrest of Robinson. He has been charged with aggravated murder.
Religious Connections
In a bizarre and horrific twist of fate, the alleged killer’s family is devout Mormons. Robinson, a former student at Utah Valley University, has been religious his entire life.
Videos that surfaced online show that, before he was fatally shot, Charlie Kirk mentioned The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in his last public speech.
Kirk said in his speech at Utah Valley University, “I love how Mormons send missionaries around the world, I love how polite they are… Half my team is Mormon. Mormons are great people. Let me just say, I’m an evangelical Christian, but I’m not one of those guys that hates Mormons.”
Moments after saying these words, Charlie Kirk was killed by a single gunshot to the neck fired from a rooftop.
Kristin Schwiermann, a neighbor who knew Tyler and his parents, Matt and Amber, told The Post that the accused killer “went to our church when he was younger.”
According to Schwiermann, Tyler was a polite and intelligent individual who reportedly received a full-ride scholarship to college.
The top leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have released a statement condemning the assassination.
They stated, “We condemn horrific acts of violence worldwide… We affirm our repeated calls to seek peace and unity despite our differences. We urge all to reject violence and instead build understanding… Recognizing that we are all children of God, we must treat one another with more dignity, compassion, and respect.”
Public Reaction
All living former U.S. presidents, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden, have condemned the assassination of Charlie Kirk, and multiple prominent figures on both sides of the political aisle have also spoken out about the tragic event.
Shortly after Kirk’s passing, President Trump addressed the nation from the White House, claiming that Kirk was a “martyr for truth and freedom” and a “legendary” figure. Trump blamed the assassination on the “radical left” rhetoric, stating that this kind of liberal message is “directly responsible for the terrorism that we’re seeing in our country today.” Trump has also announced that he will posthumously award Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom and has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in his honor.
Charlie Kirk’s body was flown from Utah to Arizona via Air Force Two. His coffin was accompanied by his wife, Erika Kirk.
A Grieving Wife’s Tribute
Wiping away tears, Erika Kirk spoke about the killing of her husband last Friday, thanking President Donald Trump and speaking about her Christian faith. She also shared insights into her husband’s political ambitions and her hope for the United States.
She said: “Mr. President, my husband loved you. And he knew that you loved him too. He did. Your friendship was amazing. You supported him so well, as did he for you.”
The widow also showed appreciation to Vice President J.D. Vance and his wife, Usha, for “bringing him home.”
Mrs. Kirk thanked the employees of Turning Point USA, which her husband co-founded by saying: “My heart is with everyone of my husband’s employees who lost a friend and a mentor. He loved what he did. Charlie said if he ever ran for office, his top priority would be to revive the American family. That was his priority.”
Erika Kirk added: “Charlie loved life. He loved his life. He loved America,” before describing some of her husband’s hobbies and his favorite sports teams. “But most of all,” she said, “Charlie loved his children. And he loved me. With all his heart. And he made sure I knew that every day.”
Robinson is still not fully cooperating with the authorities. However, according to reports, he said that he allegedly did this because Kirk was spreading “too much hate.”
