While witnessing the downfall of some powerful men, some are advising Donald Trump to stay vigilant.
They urge him to consult a lawyer after recent events involving former French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Brazil’s ex-President Jair Bolsonaro. Trump is being warned that his post-White House years might get messy.
Nicolas Sarkozy Sentenced To Five Years In Prison
Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, infamous for his height and, some might say, a rough-around-the-edges attitude, was sentenced to five years in prison.
He appeared in court, where the judge “threw the book at him” for his involvement in a criminal conspiracy. The charges stemmed from an attempt to raise campaign funds from Libya.
Sarkozy will be the first post-war French president to be imprisoned. As Sarkozy left the courtroom, he was visibly upset, yet he remained very outspoken and slammed his enemies, saying that if they wanted him to sleep in jail.
He promised, and even swore, to never apologize for anything, claiming he would sleep in jail with his head held high, maintaining the arrogant posture of the French president he had always aspired to be.
Sarkozy said it was a “scandalous” ruling and added: “If they absolutely want me to sleep in jail, I will sleep in jail, but with my head held high. I will not apologise for something I didn’t do. What happened today … is of extreme gravity in regard to the rule of law, and for the trust one can have in the justice system.”
His wife, model and singer Carla Bruni, stood next to him, motionless and silent, as the former president ranted about the situation.
One of Sarkozy’s lawyers, Jean-Michel Darrois, told reporters outside the courtroom: “We were shocked (by the sentence) because when we started hearing the decision being read out, we thought his innocence would be recognised. We hope the appeals court will see things more clearly and will recognise his innocence.”
The Conspiracy Against Gaddafi
Sarkozy was found guilty of criminal conspiracy for the elaborate efforts his aides undertook to secure millions of Euros in funds during his 2007 presidential bid. It was revealed that staff members working for Sarkozy went to great lengths to receive money from the Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.
He was acquitted in the Paris courtroom of other charges related to receiving illegal campaign funds.
According to the judge, there was no evidence that Sarkozy made a direct deal with Gaddafi. No trace of Libyan money was found in Sarkozy’s campaign. However, the judge deemed him guilty of conspiracy for instructing staff and associates to contact Gaddafi to obtain funds between 2005 and 2007.
He will receive a brief period to handle his affairs, but he is expected to be incarcerated early next month. Sarkozy will return to court on October 13 for the scheduling of his sentencing. Sarkozy might be incarcerated at La Santé prison.
Sarkozy was handed the stunning punishment weeks after the former president of Brazil was sentenced to jail. Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced to over 27 years in prison after being convicted of attempting a coup to unlawfully stay in office following his 2022 electoral defeat. He is the first former Brazilian president to be convicted for trying to overthrow an election.
Some close to Trump are closely monitoring these developments and are concerned for Trump, who was investigated for questioning the 2020 election results, for mishandling classified national security documents, and for mishandling campaign finance practices.
